Editorial Review / Publisher's Information:
Product Description Even if a person has no interest in literature whatsoever...I would bet a fair amount of money on the claim that nearly everyone has at least heard of Virgil's "Aeneid". It is perhaps one of the most important texts in Western literature and the ideas expressed as well as poetic techniques have moulded future literary works since the times of Augustus Caesar and the Roman Empire.
It uses epic techniques to tell the story of Aeneas, a hero whose ancestors founded the city of Rome. Virgil particularly used it to show his own patriotic opinion and to honour his own emperor...Augustus. From the first lines of book 1 "I sing of arms and the man", the reader is immediately drawn into the life of this incredible hero...who is this man and why is he so closely linked to weapons? I chose the headline "Do heavenly hearts contain such anger?" as i consider this to be perhaps Virgil's main theme and the question he had at the forefront of his mind when writing the epic poem. Throughout, the characters, even our hero Aeneas, are portrayed as the puppets of the gods, who decide everything and have already written the fate of mortals. The introduction of Dido at the end of Book 1, who becomes the central character of what is my favourite storyline of the epic, shows the tragic nature of the selfishness and greed of the gods. If you are going to skip out any of the books, just please make sure that you read Book 4. It is incredibly emotional and Virgil's language is beautiful.
I would particularly recommend this edition for those who are studying "The Aeneid" in classics. The Penguin Classics edition gives a brilliant summary of each book at the beginning as well as major themes that seriously help with a greater understanding of the poetry and Virgil's techniques.
