• The Best Dictionaries In The World 11 January, 2007
I happened to get my first Collins Gem Dictionary a couple of years ago. One of my guests at the hostel left it behind and I used it a coupe of times. I was amazed how specific and detailed it was, though it was an old edition. Since then. I started to build up my collection of Collins Gem dictionary and I have like 7 so far. They are just great!!

Not only does this dictionary have a more complete variety of words than many, but it also contains a number of helpful proper nouns which come in handy when reading a text which is heavy in allusions. The little grammar and verse section also is a good resource to have around if something slips your mind. Using this, I've never even thoughts about buying a bigger dictionary since this has so much of what I need.

• As Many Words As The Big Boys 03 July, 2006
This little book has as many words and definitions as most of the larger (and more expensive) works. It may not look impressive on the old bookshelf but it is a very useful and afordable dictionary.

• Too Small To Read - Brief Simplistic Entries 13 February, 2008
This is a very small book - only 4 x 2.5 x 2-inches at best. You may need a magnifying glass to read the tiny print. Lookup entry is often a single word - can be misleading. Not a friendly companion when reading latin.

I am a Latin and Greek undergraduate student, and I have owned this dictionary for about 10 years now. I originally bought it for in class use in an introductory Latin course, and it came in handy. I am currently in my 3rd year of undergraduate studies in Classical philology, and while I do not use this dictionary for translation at home, I always keep it in my purse along with the text that I am currently translating for use when a large dictionary is unavailable, and have often been surprised to find words listed that can't be found in larger dictionaries! Long vowels are marked, which is great for reading poetry. This dictionary is great for use in class, as I have often used it to quickly look up words that I forgot to look up home. I have given this 4 stars rather than the 5 that I would like to give it, because outside of my intro to Latin course where we had some composition I have very rarely used the eng-lat section, and I feel that the space would have been better spent on more lat-eng. Despite that, I feel that this is a dictionary that all Latin students could make good use of as its size makes it very handy, and laymen looking for a cheap dictionary to look up the odd word in Latin would make good use of this as well. This is probably the best purchase I have ever made under 10 dollars!
