Product Description Since the publication of the first edition, a new version of the VHDL standard has been agreed and analogue extensions to the language have also been adopted. The second edition of Digital System Design with VHDL includes additions in two important areas; sections on writing testbenches have been added to relevant chapters, and the addition of a new chapter on VHDL-AMS and mixed-signal modeling. The unique approach will be appreciated by undergraduates in Electronic Engineering and Computer Engineering in all years of their courses and by students undertaking postgraduate study. There is also a proven need from industry for graduates with knowledge of VHDL and the associated design tools and this book will be an asset to engineers who wish to continue their studies.

Very Good Educational Book 19 July, 2005 In this book VHDL is presented with a hardware prespective. As a result, you won't find the chapters organized by language's features but by conceptual entities like combinational logic, sequential logic e.t.c. It dares to cover some very important issues like Design for Test and Asynchronous system design that other VHDL books simply ignore because of their advanced nature. Software oriented people may find usefull to read before or after this book a VHDL reference-style book to have a complete and organized view of the syntax and features of VHDL in a similar way someone would present C#. As a hardware oriented book, this may present less and more advanced features of VHDL from early chapters to design complete working examples. I should mention that simulation issues have been successfully integrated at the end of each chapter (and a dedicated chapter). This way, one can test models even from the first chapters. Nice idea! This book can be used as a textbook and as a reference and it is an excellent choice.

Very Nice 03 February, 2007 The book came in perfect condition, sealed, in time. It covers a lot of topics of design including synthesis aspects and the new chapter on VHDL-AMS is very useful. Very good!

Great Book For Understandig Vhdl By An Easy Aproach... 27 December, 2006 Digital systems design with VHDL is a great book from the VHDL perspective. As the other reviewer said, it's presented in a hardware perspective rather than language features, but I would say that some chapters tend to be language features oriented.
It must be said that this is the only book I've seen that takes the time to explain testbenches, simulation and other subjects that, for better or worse, are very important for the complete design of a digital system from a "programming language" perspective. It does that by implementing complete or partial chapters wich concentrates in explaining this kind of stuff and in an organised and easy to follow way.
Now, this book could be more than awesome depending on what you're expecting from it...:
If what you want is a book that delivers in depth hardware concepts at the time that delivers VHDL code, language features, etc... then you should keep looking because, even thought it does give concepts (the chapters are presented in a hardware perspective), they tend to lack depth. The book concentrates explaining VHDL code for those hardware entities at the time that introduces and explain the language features and concepts needed to create and/or elaborate something.
If what you're looking for is exactly what I just described: a book that, even thought doesn't gives to much explanation about how hardware physically works (it does exist thought), delivers example codes and language features in a way that tends to be easy (and not because of that vague), explaining portions of code for a better understanding of what's happenning and implementing the language features VHDL works with (syntax and all other stuff), then this is the book for you.
