Why are all of Dessen's books so amazing? Why do I always fall in love with her characters? And WHEN will she write another book?!?!? I can't put anything different in this review that I haven't put in all my other Sarah Dessen book reviews! Maybe when she writes a bad book I will. HA! Like that'll happen! Put Just Listen on your MUST READ list. And if you don't have a MUST READ list...get one please! lol

 • Wonderful, Real, And Engaging
20 September, 2008

This is the first Sarah Dessen book I have picked up, and randomly at that since this one looked the most interesting on her almost mini shrine at Borders Express. It blew me away. The characters were well-developed, and the author showed many unique qualities about each of them and gave us insight into the even the smallest characters. The dialouge was real and not forced. I felt transported to a high school and felt everything Annabel did. Annabel Greene is a part-time model and seems like she has the perfect life. If you look through her glass house, all you see is the exterior though; not her real thoughts. The girl she thought was her best friend dumped her rudely and meanly at a party, and although the whole situation was underestimated, Annabel can't and won't tell anyone what happened that May night. Alone at school, Annabel becomes friends with the music loving and honest Owen, who had anger issues at one point but now has recovered and teaches Annabel about his way of thinking. But Annabel doesn't just have her former friend Sophie to deal with: her older sister Whitney suffers from an eating disorder, and the whole family is concentrated on her recovery. Annabel doesn't want to tell anyone anything at the risk of them getting hurt; as she tells Owen, she is a nice liar. One thing that made this book so real was the thoughts that came to Annabel along the way, the revelations she had. It gives the reader a whole new perspective on the young adult world. I do not think anything can top this book: it was so real and wise that it might never be repeated again. The author doesn't let any character get away, a depth is disocvered in each one. There were funny moments, there were sad moments, yet this book wasn't predictable or unpredictable: it was life, and that is what made it great.

 • Just Listen: A Book Review By Clarissa Sorenson
10 August, 2008

Just Listen is another fantastic realistic fiction book from the famed writer Sarah Dessen - without a doubt, her writing remains fresh and interesting, even with her large number of teen-oriented books already published. This story portrays the struggle of teenage Annabel, who strives to find happiness in a world where she is unaccepted and unnoticed. After being rejected by her popular and manipulative friend Sophie, Annabel Greene begins to explore a friendship with social outcast Owen, discovering more about herself as he teaches her how to live. Annabel must also learn to put up with the pressures of family life- dealing with her newly anorexic sister and continuing to take modeling jobs to keep her mother happy. Underlying the toils of friendship and family, there is Annabel's effort in finding herself - and trying to sort out who she will become. This book has a well thought out plot and an interesting storyline. Sarah Dessen's writing keeps you hooked to every word as she lets you into the thoughts and feelings of the complicated teenage mind. Her power to make you feel for the character is strong, and without a doubt this helps to generate three-dimensional characters from the two-dimensional page. Overall, I enjoyed this book very much and found it to be a real page turner. As a teenage reader, Dessen's story really spoke to me and left me with the important message from Annabel Greene: "Don't look or judge. Just Listen."

 • My Second Dessen Book, And She Does It Again!
11 August, 2008

The first Dessen book I read was about four years ago (in high school) when I picked up The Truth About Forever. It instantly became my favorite book of all time. However, I didn't feel like picking up another Dessen book because they were all about teenagers in high school and I already started reading more "mature" books about 20-30 year olds that just seemed more interesting than reading about teen angst and insecurity issues. Now, four years later, I'm in college, and I've decided to put this book on my summer reading list. Let me just say, I am so glad I did because it certainly touched me in more ways than one. I didn't think I would even enjoy it as much because it's a bit weird reading about people who are at younger stages than you in their lives (there's a lot of revisiting familiar feelings when your hormones are at its craziest). However, I will admit that it didn't "wow" me as much as The Truth About Forever. There are some parts of the book that dragged on a little bit longer than it should have, and unfortunately I also have to admit that there were points in the story when I became annoyed with the main character (which is the worst thing that can happen in my book). But overall, it was a good book, and I would definitely recommend it if asked. (BUT I WOULD RECOMMEND THE TRUTH ABOUT FOREVER FIRST! AND YOU WOULDNT EVEN HAVE TO ASK!! SOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOOOOD!)
