I Love My Tniv! 01 October, 2007 I just purchased the TNIV (got the red one) and I LOVE it! This Bible is the perfect size - not too small, not too big, the font is easy on the eyes, it's light and easy to bring around, and I love the soft feel of the cover.
The translation is wonderful! Much of the more dubious phraseology in the NIV has been updated so that it's more readily understandable (e.g. "with child" changed to "pregnant")... and unlike many opponents of the TNIV suggest, this translation is not "gender-neutral" as much as it is "gender-inclusive." I love that it is CLEAR that I (as a woman & daughter of God) am included in the commands, exhortations and promises of God. :) I thought I would never make the switch from my beloved NIV (from which I had memorized over a hundred Scripture verses), but the Strauss vs. Grudem debate tipped me over to "the other side" -- i.e. the TNIV. It has been a good change -- refreshing and enlivening for my Spiritual journey. Thank you, TNIV translators!!!! =)

More A Paraphrase Than A Translation 17 September, 2006 In my opinion the TNIV strays too far from the original manuscripts it is based on. It is more a paraphrase than a translation. I prefer the NKJV, NIV, or NASB to this.

God's Word 18 February, 2008 I think this is a great product because it is God's word in contemporary language!

Strange Taste 21 August, 2007 Just one sentence about the translation: handy as a second translation, but not suitable for study or liturgical use; the NRSV is still unbeaten. Now to the strange taste. Burgundy/brown leather with silver(!!) page edges. So kitsch. Why not gold? Silver makes the publication look so cheap. Now for the binding: glued. Not the best way to bind a bible with a leather cover. Made in China: why China? What happened to the US or EU book binders? Red letter text: why does Zondervan ignore the express wishes of the translators by using red letter text in the NT? Zondervan seems to know better. There are other black letter publications of the TNIV out there.
The above more than justifies the three stars. But ... at last there is a version of the TNIV which can be used by adults. Most versions seem to be aimed at putting off adults from buying it because of the gaudy covers which seem to be aimed at young people with little or no taste. Zondervan seems to be afraid that adults will get to like the text and stop using the NIV. For other versions suitable for adult use try those from Cambridge University Press.
Zondervan seems to be more interested in milking the bible for big $$$ than offering quality.

Re-newed Bible Reading Vigor... 08 March, 2007 Great Bible. Cool and compact. Pages turn with that gentle manner that only pages in a Bible, emitting that ever aromatic "new Bible" smell. This is a great translation. Much careful scholarship went into this version, gender inclusive or not, it is hands down one of the best translations around.
