Very Different From 1st Edition, Well Worth The New Purchase 02 December, 2008 As others have said in their reviews, this is a very good update. Birn's experience over the last few years, especially at Pixar have given us even more to learn from. I've been lighting in games CG for 10 years and have learned new insights into different working methods and techniques from this book.
The author does a great job of making the book non-software specific and gives a lot of jumping off points for further research. The biggest omission is a lack of coverage of video game/real-time lighting techniques. While a lot of these skills can be carried over, most of the techniques in the book focus on shot-based lighting.
Thankfully, the written content of the book is of high a quality as the techniques described within. All too often CG tech books are poorly written and edited. This one does not suffer due to the amount of effort and skill put into it.

Digital-lighting & Rendering- Jeremy Birn 09 June, 2008 An excellent book for those artists with some experience in 3D model making and experience in either traditional art and/photography. As a professional illustrator with 25 years experience in airbrushing, 15 of those years in 2d computer art and 8 years in 3D ,this book has provided me with many revelations. This book spends a lot of time detailing proper lighting for organic subject matter, architecture, and technical renderings. Subjects included are lighting basics, shadow types, , environments, color, and production pipelines . Jeremy Birn does a great job of preparing the reader to create 3D images that exhibit a thorough knowledge of lighting for a 3D environment. Highly recommended!

Love This Book 15 October, 2008 I used DAZ Studio and while this book is not software specific, I found it extremely helpful and noticed a big improvement in my art once I understood about light placement on 3D models. It also had a nice section on composition. I found it easy to understand, not too technical and it answered so many of my questions. I highly recommend this book.

Unfocussed Content 17 December, 2008 This book doesn't address a specific audience. If it's intended for a professional audience, the first part of the book is fluff and useless. If it's intended for amateurs, then it's written above their heads. For example, one piece of advice is to "make sure you don't clip" an image. The book does not clarify this statement for amateurs, and it does not say HOW to do this for professionals (which is what both groups would want!) The "Exercises" are again just fluff: "hey, man look around you." A professionally-written book these days should include a CD of files (examples, stuff to play with, before and after scenes or images, focussed tutorials). It is just inexcusable for a lack of a CD to play with or learn from. I am bitterly disappointed with this book. To be sure, there are gems along the way: the item on converting HDR probe files using Photoshop is superb (because it is practical advice), but such gems are few and far between. I am a professional instructional designer, and this book get a failing grade for (a) failing to address a specific audience, and (b) failing to be practical for that audience. If you want to feel you're in with the "in"-crowd by hearing industry jargon, then this is the book for you. If you want solid, practical advice or instruction to improve your CG skills, look elsewhere.
