Product Description The love of family. The heartbreak of war. The triumph of coming home.
1940. Rural Wisconsin. Sixteen-year-old Earl “Earwig” Gunderman is not like other boys his age. Fiercely protected by his older brother, Earwig sees his town and the world around him through the prism of his own unique understanding. He sees his mother’s sadness and his father’s growing solitude. He sees his brother, Jimmy, falling in love with the most beautiful girl in town. And while Earwig is unable to make change for customers at his family’s store, he is singularly well suited to understand what other people in his town cannot: that life as they know it is about to change; the coming war will touch them all.
For Jimmy will enlist in the military. And Earwig will watch his parents’ marriage buckle under the strain of a family secret. And when Jimmy returns–a fractured shadow of his former self–it is Earwig’s turn to care for him. His struggles to right the wrongs visited upon his revered older brother by war, women, and life are at once heartwarming and riotously funny. Their family and town irrevocably altered, Earwig and Jimmy fight to find their own places in a world changed forever.

Wonderfully Touching... 27 December, 2008 I just finished this the other night and loved it. It was moving and eye-opening to a world before my time but still managed to remain current in feeling. Earwig's simple way of looking at the world should remind us that PEOPLE and FEELINGS are the important things in life, not the materialistic things we sometimes let get in the way.

A Simple Truth 02 December, 2008 Carry Me Home by Sandra Kring is a novel that works. In the hand of a lesser writer Earwig, the main character, could have been a caricature of exaggerated simplicity. Kring, however, has created a character to remember..........a kind hearted , simpleminded boy whose take on life is refreshingly honest and wise. The story evokes a nostalgic feel ........elliciting a time when life was both so simple , yet so complex.Through the simple minded Earwig, we learn about the devastation and sacrifice of World War 2. We are part of a sweet coming of age story imbued with serious topics that are seen through Earwig's childlike eyes. We witness the deep love between brothers that leads to Earwig's new sense of responsibility and growth. So many basic tenets of life and the challenges that it creates are heartwarmingly depicted in this novel. This is a book to savor on a summerday or a winter evening. It will make you laugh, cry and think about what is really important.

Excellent Story 12 September, 2008 I really loved "Carry Me Home". Like the one reviewer says on the cover, I was sad to see it end.
For such a simple minded guy, Earl had a lot of insight about things.
He was a loyal brother, friend and son.
Couldn't we all use an "Earl" in our lives?

Carry Me Home 24 October, 2008 I liked the premise of the book. At times, some of the characters were overbearing and it took too long to lead the reader to the ending. Too much repetition of information. Wisconsin reader
