 • Favorite Nelson Demille Book
09 October, 2009

No one should pass up the best book ever. I own it in hardback and unabridged CD's. It is almost impossible to put down....truly a wonderful look into Russian. (I don't think Russia has changed much either!!!)

 • Friendless Author Syndrome
28 February, 2010

I liked Plum Island, and this one had several hundred five-star reviews, so I looked forward to reading it. What a bad book it turned out to be. For starters, we have 400 pages here, and about 300 of them are pure shuck and jive, drinking coffee and walking around the office type stuff. It seemed like fifty pages or so was devoted to a going-away party that added nothing to the plot. It just was a motherload of cutsie dialogue that ultimately made me want to heave. When I read stuff like this, I get the impression that the author is such a jerk or is so lonely that his only friends are his fictional characters. Hence, my notion that this book is the result of Friendless Author Syndrome. Now I don't begrudge somebody their imaginary friends. But the problem is, when an author's only friends are fictional characters, it isn't likely that the author will give these characters the foibles and quirks that will ultimately make them interesting. He wants his friends to be perfect, and that's because they really are idealized versions of himself. Or in this case, a knock-off of Lee Child's amazing Jack Reacher, but a lot less interesting. The charm school idea, which was an American-culture immersion spy school, was an interesting premise, but the author did little with it. In the end, even the violence is boring. Read by Scott Brick, who seemed to yawn his way through it, and I don't blame him. Scott Brick has done a fantastic job narrating many books, but with this one, he relied on a really weird vocal cadence, dropping down a tonic third for the last two or three words of most sentences. It started to drive me bonkers. I don't know why this book has so many good reviews. I thought it stank.

 • Another Great Demille Book
26 December, 2009

I started reading Demille books a few years ago and none have disappointed. I have not completed The Charm School yet, but the plot, characters, and writing style so far have continued to grab my attention. Based upon my progress, I would recommend this book to all who enjoy Demille's writing style or are interested in Cold War Russia (politics, landmarks, culture, etc). Enjoy!

 • Plausable Cold War Fear
07 January, 2010

More Alan Furst than Tom Clancy. The main characters are not superheros, but real people in tough situations. I highly recommend this book for people looking for intrigue with a taste of real world Soviet flavor. I like it and will read it again. I lived abroad for many years and Demille has a good grasp of expatriate / diplomatic life. Although the cold war is over, many aspects of this novel ring true for people who live in foreign environments.
