 • Amazing Advice.
09 March, 2010

I had been on Accutane twice for my acne when I got this book a few years ago. Not horrific acne, but bad enough that my dermatologist let me get on Accutane. I wish I had read this book first... it really, really worked for me. I don't think anything else I've ever purchased for five dollars has made such a change in my appearance. I didn't use the glycolic lotion like he suggests, I used glycolic face wash from MD Forte and that worked fine for me. I still use that face wash and buy it for people for Christmas presents!

 • Treats The Symptom Without Addressing The Root Of The Problem...
15 October, 2009

The Clear Skin Diet is a much better book and will work for everyone. Without the "24 hour" hype, the Clear Skin Diet is based on mountains of evidence that show the real reason you have acne. It's not because you're not using Salicytic Acid, though even in the Clear Skin Diet book that is suggested. Why was acne practically nonexistent in the Japanese 50 years ago? Now the Japanese, now that they have adopted a Westernized diet, have acne at the SAME rate as Americans. The largest study on acne ever conducted was the introduction of the Western diet, with dairy and saturated fats, high sugar and little fish, into the Japanese culture, and watching what happened to their skin in only 20 years. The same thing happened to the Eskimos when they adopted our diet. You've got to see acne for what it is. A chronic inflammation problem. Nutritionists KNOW what causes inflammation and what prevents it.

 • It Actually Works. Really.
07 March, 2010

I'm 31 and like anyone whose suffered from serious acne, I've had periods where products helped but the acne has always come back. When I found the Acne Cure nothing was working. It was several months after I'd had my son and my skin was the worst it's been since high school, with painful cysts and regular pimples. Everyday I woke up with more zits even though I was taking spironolactone, birth control pills, and using duac. My dermatologist had suggested a course of Accutane & I'd decided it would probably be the only way to get my skin back under control. As a last ditch effort I looked up the Clear Skin Diet and came across the Acne Cure. I was beyond skeptical. If the dermatologist hadn't been able to do it I doubted anything woud clear up my skin. But, I figured what could it hurt to try, I'd already spent months using products that made it worse, so what was a few more weeks? I got the book & the first thing that struck me was that even though I'd had acne, and had been seeing dermatologists, for the past 15 years this was the first time I'd ever heard the details of why breakouts happen (how the pores clog, how the body reacts, etc). The explanations make alot of sense. It took the mystery of breakouts away and helped me better understand what was going on in skin. It was also the first time I got a clear understanding of how prescription and over the counter products work on acne. Within 3 days of starting the routine I wasn't getting as many new pimples and the ones I had were started to clear. I followed the routine for 6 weeks and had about 60% improvement in the ammount of acne, so I decided to do another 6 weeks. There were two areas on my chin that kept breaking out, but by then end of the 2nd course these had cleared up too. I also started using 400 mg Vitex a day (Chasteberry, thanks to a review here and some research) to help stop breakouts right before my period. I'm doing a 3rd course now and am about 95% clear. Today I have 2 zits which is an amazing improvement from when I started the program & couldn't even count how many I had. I also noticed that the pimples I get now are smaller, clear up quickly, and don't leave red marks. I'm going to be starting maintenance at the end of this course and am not sure what that routine will be like. I wish Dr. Dubrow had included more information on that phase. My Routine: Morning: I do this in the shower so it doesn't add any time to my morning routine. I put on a layer of Saylic Acid, leave on for a few minutes while I shave etc. then rinse off. Then I put on a layer of Glycolic Acid, leave on for about 3 - 4 minutes and wash off. When I get out of the shower I put on moisturizer and when I it dries I put a little Acnomel on any zits. Night: Repeat the Saylic Acid & Glycolic Acid from the morning. I put on the product, go do something, then come back to wash it off so I'm not stuck in the bathroom for 10 minutes. Then I put on moisturizer. Before I go to bed I use an ice cube on any zits (or areas that feel like one is coming) then put benzoyl peroxide on the area & put an ice pack over it for a few more minutes. I'm not as good as I should be about the icing. I probaby only do it 3 x a week or if I have a flare up. If my skin starts to get tight or to peel I don't use the Glycolic acid for a day and by the next day my skin is usually normal again. I tried several different products but these are the ones I've ended up staying with: - Neutragena Oil Free Acne Wash (2% Saylic Acid) - Walgreens Alpha Hydroxy Face Cream (8% Glycolic Acid of 70% solution) - Treatment from [...] (2.5% benzoyl peroxide)(I already had this & like the product) - Neutrageona Continuous Hydration SPF 25 moisturizer - Neutrageona Continuous Hydration Night moisturizer - Adult Acnomel (Resorcinol2% , Sulfur8%) - Vitex (400mg day) * It seems like alot of products but the total comes to about $65 which is less than I was paying for a co-pay & prescriptions, and it lasts me about 6 - 8 weeks. I'm completely sold on this book and have been telling everyone I know with Acne to try it. For the first time I years I don't have to try to cover up my pimples. I can leave the house with just mositurizer on my face & not feel self concious, and that is an amazing feeling. It might not work for everyone but if you're reading this review and feeling hopeless and resigned to having acne forever like I was, really, what do you have to lose?

 • It Works For Me
26 August, 2009

This book lets you know how to take care of your skin at any age. It tells you what products to use and that they dont have to be expensive but can be bought at any drug store. I had this book before and lost it in a move and had to reorder it when i started breaking out again. As soon as i started up the regimen my skin cleared up a lot and after a few days.. no more acne. I have tried everything but this book shows you what will work for different kinds of acne. Thank you Dr Dubrow. I no longer have to be embarrassed by outbreaks and that is a beautiful thing!

 • The Acne Cure? Not Quite
03 February, 2010

What drives me a little batty about the acne cure is it's not really a cure. You're just using a system to treat your acne. You can't cure acne by treating the outside, your skin, because acne has nothing to do with your skin. Oil, dead skin, bacteria, sure they skin problems and when you get a clogged pore, you get pimples. But what's causing the oil, dead skin and bacteria in the first place? That's the problem that this book doesn't address. A real cure means you take care of the real problems once and they go away forever. You can in fact cure acne but if you follow along with this book, you'll just keep treating yourself for the rest of your life. Why not deal with the real problems inside of you and get rid of acne once and for all instead of following regimen after regimen? [...]
