 • A Great Intro To Photography
15 May, 2007

After doing photography my whole life with a point and shoot camera I finally bought a "real" camera. A Canon SLR that I had no idea how to use. So after a lot of research at the bookstore I settled on this book, and I am very happy I did. It teaches a beginner all the different important functions on your camera that you need to learn and why you need to know it. This book is very concise and detailed. All the functions on my camera are explained in detail in this book. If you have a new SLR that you don't know how to use I highly recommend this book.

 • Basic Book Of Photography
21 February, 2010

This book drops a little over 400 pages of information on the reader. It can be a little daunting for a beginner who has never snapped a photo. A good 20% of the book is background history and technical information on film photography. It's a very interesting to read - but if you're not interested in anything other than digital photography, then you may want to try some of Scott Kelby's books to start off with. The entire book is basically straight text and technical information about camera operation. While this is good, it can get dry if you're expecting glossy color photos every few pages. I appreciated the book for what it was - a full on explanation of camera operation from the technical terms standpoint as well as the timeline progression of chemical film up to digital pixel photography. It makes a good addition and fills in the blanks other books may leave, but I definitly wouldn't buy just this one book and then forsake all others.

 • Great Intro Book To Photography
19 June, 2009

A couple folks have pointed out this is not a book for professionals. Given that it is titled, "The Basic Book of Photography", I think one should expect that. That being said, it is not a simplistic view, it goes into sufficient depth to really help you understand fundamentals that are often taken for granted in other books and websites. This Fifth Edition (not sure if there is a more recent one) was written in 2003 or 2004 so it is slightly dated, but none of the concepts you care about change from year to year. If you were buying a digital camera, you might look for advice elsewhere, but the basic understanding of how to use the camera doesn't really change much. As a novice photographer, this is still my "go to" book for core reading. Once I have the basics, I'll move on to a book specifically geared toward the topic I'm interested in.

 • The Photography Textbook
24 February, 2008

I give it four stars instead of 5 because it is not a book for everyone. It will not show you how to be a great photographer, nor will it step-by-step for dummies teach you to compose pictures. It will, however, educate you on the details and basics of photography. I've used a lot of point and clicks, and I've used several SLRs. All in all, even with today's set it and forget it cameras, you can take a good picture but you can't take a great photograph without knowing the technicals of what's going on behind the lens. Start here if you are patient and want to learn what photography is all about.

 • Excellent For Beginners
10 January, 2010

I thought this book was easy to comprehend. It provides plenty of examples to make sure you get the idea. It covers many various information from exposure, lighting, to special effects. It also references film cameras. I certainly would recommend this to others.
