Product Description The Complete Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm
Perhaps no other stories possess as much power to enchant, delight, and surprise as those penned by the immortal Brothers Grimm. Now, in the new, expanded third edition, renowned scholar and folklorist Jack Zipes has translated all 250 tales collected and published by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, plus twenty-nine rare tales omitted from the original German edition, as well as narratives uncovered in the brothers’ letters and papers.
Truly the most comprehensive translation to date, this critically acclaimed edition recaptures the fairy tales as the Brothers Grimm intended them to be: rich, stark, spiced with humor and violence, resonant with folklore and song.
One of the world’s experts on children’s literature, Jack Zipes is a professor of German at the University of Minnesota and is the author of numerous books on folklore and fairy tales.

Colorful And Easy To Read 06 February, 2006 Growing up, the only fairy tales that I have ever known were those that have been sanitized -- no wonder I have always thought fairy tales are boring. My reading of this book has completely changed my views! What color, what spice!

Grim, Grimmer, Grimmest 03 May, 2008 I love spooky stuff, and I love fairy tales. This book is great and a favorite of mine for a lot of reasons, but more than anything, I like the frankness of the original stories, and the effect it has on my psyche while reading it. What better way to keep kids in line than to expose them to a little bit of the ugly side of the real world? This book does that, but without being overbearing, or preachy. Some of the stories are short, some are long. Some have a moral or a positive ending, some serve no clear purpose and end horribly. ("Then she and her accomplice were put aboard a ship peppered with holes and sent out to sea, where they soon sank beneath the waves." The end.) There are not a lot of illustrations in this book, which is neither here nor there. This is just a fun, interesting little book that can be enjoyed by both adults and children. If you are looking for a companion volume to learn even more about the Grimms and their stories, check out The Annotated Brothers Grimm.

Bed Lecture At It's Best: Fairy Tales 15 October, 2008 As I know from other seniors, the Tales by the Grimm Brothers made it long ago to the U.S.A.; they was told to from grand parents and parents to their kids and grand children, in English and even in German before and during WW1 and WW2. Some of them made it to great Walt Disney productions. And some of them were censored and published for schools as new editions.
I'm so happy that a man as Jack Zipes translated (with help of best translators) all the tales of the collection of Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm (the authors). Zipes wrote also an introduction to this book which may help you to understand why the brother Grimm collected this "folk stories" - it was (so to speak) a political motivated task the brothers engaged themselves in.
I really like this book, just an affordable paperback having a permanent place on my night table. Yeah, it's in English, as born Swiss my "mother tongue" is Swiss/German, now I'm living in the United States of America and read the tales (told and read to me in my youths) in English, now I can share it (tell about) in the lingo people around me can understand, even made them read some of these tales for themselves. Great Book, great work.
