Product Description
#1 New York Times bestselling master of suspense Dean Koontz delivers a mesmerizing new thriller that explores the razor-thin line between the best and worst of human nature—and the anarchy simmering just beneath society’s surface—as a likeable, successful family man is drawn into a confrontation with a foe of unimaginable malice….

Bestselling novelist Cullen “Cubby” Greenwich is a lucky man and he knows it. He makes a handsome living doing what he enjoys. His wife, Penny, a children’s book author and illustrator, is the love of his life. Together they have a brilliant six-year-old, Milo, affectionately dubbed “Spooky,” and a non-collie named Lassie, who’s all but part of the family.

So Cubby knows he shouldn’t let one bad review of his otherwise triumphant new book get to him—even if it does appear in the nation’s premier newspaper and is penned by the much-feared, seldom-seen critic, Shearman Waxx. Cubby knows the best thing to do is ignore the gratuitously vicious, insulting, and inaccurate comments. Penny knows it, even little Milo knows it. If Lassie could talk, she’d tell Cubby to ignore them, too.

Ignore Shearman Waxx and his poison pen is just what Cubby intends to do. Until he happens to learn where the great man is taking his lunch. Cubby just wants to get a look at the mysterious recluse whose mere opinion can make or break a career—or a life.

But Shearman Waxx isn’t what Cubby expects; and neither is the escalating terror that follows what seemed to be an innocent encounter. For Waxx gives criticism; he doesn’t take it. He has ways of dealing with those who cross him that Cubby is only beginning to fathom. Soon Cubby finds himself in a desperate struggle with a relentless sociopath, facing an inexorable assault on far more than his life.

Fearless, funny, utterly compelling, Relentless is Dean Koontz at his riveting best, an unforgettable tale of the fragile bonds that hold together all that we most cherish—and of those who would tear those bonds asunder.

 • Just Bad...
11 March, 2010

So Koontz has basically run out of ideas so is starting to recycle old material. Sadly, this recycling process produces unbelievable characters and situations. Here's an example: Let's say you're sleeping peacefully and someone you know breaks into your house and Taser's you. What would a normal person do? Call the police maybe? What would a rich bestselling author do? Maybe call the police, hire 24 hour security/bodyguards, hold a press conference and finger the guy? Yep sounds reasonable. What does the character in this book do? He jokes with his wife, makes up reasons why he shouldn't call the police, makes breakfast for his kid, oh and packs for an road trip to think about what to do. Huh? Come on Koontz, I'll accept characters with super powers but not characters that act like morons. As the plot develops the silliness just increases but really the worst part is the dialogue and the nonstop joking in the face of life threatening situations. The end comes way too fast, is the typical Koontz let-down, and just kinda ends with no explanation of anything. If you want to read a real thriller read "Intensity", not this garbage.

 • Abrupt Ending...
12 March, 2010

The book was really good, it kept going at a good pace until the ending when you found out the secret and it ends...sorta. I like his books but usually his endings are sometimes the worst part. Also when he does the bantering back and forth between the characters can be annoying also. This book is similar to Bentley Little-Dispatch-which was great and crazy fun which his books usually are. Still, this one is a good read just needed a stronger finish. Would have given it 5 stars but because of the ending I will drop it a star.

 • Relentless Indeed
18 March, 2010

A writer named Cullen Greenwich is happily married to another writer Penny. Both make a great living through their novels. And they have a son Milo, who is a computer nerd. And not to forget their dog Lassie. But Cullen has an encounter with a critique, Shearman Waxx, who has written a bad review of his recent novel(the only bad review of the book in the media). Soon enough a series of deadly incidences take place and Cullen's family is on the run from Shearman Waxx. I liked depiction of security measures taken by Penny's parents. Gore violence continues till the end. I'll not go into the details of the story further. I loved this book and Koontz's writing style. He sticks to the good rules of craft. It was hard to find passive sentences. Active verbs fit in well. There is humor interspersed here and there, especially between the husband and wife dialogues which is hard to do in a suspense novel. Language flows smoothly. There are no long and boring paragraphs. Each chapter begins where it should begin and ends in a cliffhanger. But most readers will want a breathing space from continuing suspense and I would have better appreciated if the family had a few chapters during which thinking and interaction between characters goes on rather than just physical action. For too long in the book we don't know what Milo was doing with his computer equipment and neither does Milo know. But when the science fiction stuff kicked in I lost interest. While most of the book is an interesting read I was intrigued by the ending.

 • Humorous Or A Thriller?
02 March, 2010

Too confusing to me. Seemed like it wanted to be witty, clever, funny at times but then it turns serious, action like at others, then throw in sci fiction and you end up with a mess. just didnt seem to come from an author as famous at Koontz. i wonder if it was an up and comer, no name author if it ever would have been published. i really wanted to like it but it just did not deliver. And the ending, wow talk about rushed and over, bam. Seemed like a lot of work for this family then bam, throw in some science fiction and bam its a magical, mystical ending. Never new much about the bad guy Waxx, seemed to stiff, no good back ground of a evil character. It was all silly with a family that had a goofy sense of humor. Oh well, better luck next time.

 • Avoid It At All Costs
16 March, 2010

Not only is this the worst Koontz book I have ever read, it is quite possibly the worst book I have ever read. (Full disclosure: I am only 2/3's of the way through, and seriously debating whether to bother finishing it.) The plot is completely unbelievable. The characters are completely unbelievable. Worse, I don't even give-a-hoot what ultimately happens to them. In this book we have friends of the protagonists who just happen to own a house equipped with bullet-proof glass and a panic room - both of which, of course, become needed as the plot develops. We have another friend who just happens to be a cop's widow packing heat and who just happens to have kept and maintained her deceased husband's 4X4 - both of which, of course, become needed as the plot develops. And lastly, we have the in-laws who are survivalists complete with an armory, and who just happen to be living in their underground bunker at the time of these occurrences. I'm fully expecting another character to appear towards the end of the book who just happens to be building an H-bomb. I won't claim to be a Koontz fan; however, I have read a few of his earlier works and recall liking them. That's part of what drew me to this book. I really can't fully express how bad it is. It's only saving grace is that it is short and reads quickly.
