Product Description

Written by networking veteran with 20 years of experience, Network Warrior provides a thorough and practical introduction to the entire network infrastructure, from cabling to the routers. What you need to learn to pass a Cisco certification exam such as CCNA and what you need to know to survive in the real world are two very different things. The strategies that this book offers weren 't on the exam, but they 're exactly what you need to do your job well.

Network Warrior takes you step by step through the world of hubs, switches, firewalls, and more, including ways to troubleshoot a congested network, and when to upgrade and why. Along the way, you 'll gain an historical perspective of various networking features, such as the way Ethernet evolved. Based on the author 's own experience as well as those he worked for and with, Network Warrior is a Cisco-centric book, focused primarily on the TCP/IP protocol and Ethernet networks -- the realm that Cisco Systems now dominates. The book covers:

The type of networks now in use, from LANs, WANs and MANs to CANs

  • The OSI Model and the layers involved in sending data
  • Hubs, repeaters, switches, and trunks in practice
  • Auto negotiation and why it 's a common problem in network slowdowns
  • Route maps, routing protocols, and switching algorithms in Cisco routers
  • The resilient Ethernet -- how to make things truly redundant
  • Cisco 6500 multi-layer switches and the Catalyst 3750 switch
  • Telecom nomenclature -- why it 's different from the data world
  • T1 and DS3
  • Firewall theory, designing access lists, authentication in Cisco devices
  • Server load balancing technology
  • Content switch module in action
  • Designing QOS and what QOS does not do
  • IP design and subnetting made easy

The book also explains how to sell your ideas to management, how networks become a mess as a company grows, and why change control is your friend. Network Warrior will help network administrators and engineers win the complex battles they face every day.

 • Best Network Book I've Read In A Long Time. Ever?
09 February, 2010

I'm keeping this short and sweet. I have the CCNA, CCNP, CCIP, and just passed the CCIE R&S written. Looking back; this book filled in so many gaps for me and this is a must read for anybody who wants to be successful in the Information Technology field. The chapters regarding CSU/DSU alarms and what these indicate was such a big help. Stuff you can't learn from Cisco Press books or taking any of their courses. Also, the section where the author breaks down interface errors was massive for me. That section helped me so much in the ISP world when I was getting started in my supporting roles. It's just a wonderful book that answers so many questions and gives you the real picture of how things are implemented on the 'outside'. Not all of us are going to be Network Admins of an intranetwork. This book covers everything you don't see 'upstream' per say and describes the processes involved in a very easy way to learn. Again, Don't think twice about this book. This is a must read and it's my favorite of all time. Yes, of all time. It doesn't get any better than this.

 • Does What It Claims To Do
03 October, 2009

Total gap filler. Take theory learned in CCNA add real life and you have this book. If you work with Cisco gear and need a go-to refresher this is it. Great on the job every day book for network admins and engineers, also recommend for anyone who is thinking about CCNP. My new favorite networking book.

 • Ccna And Beyond...
01 January, 2010

As the back of the book says, "This book begins where certification exams leave off...". I've just stepped off my first real Network Engineering contract job, and is still studying for that elusive CCNA. I have been a Sys Admin for over ten years and I must say - the World of Networks is the "true" IT. I've had a Network + cert for almost a decade, but I was NOT prepared for some of the things required on the real job arena. Some engineers that worked with me didn't yet have their CCNA either, but they knew their stuff. If you are studying for a CCNA certification yourself, you have to ask yourself one question - are studying to pass a test, or do you want to learn something? If you want to learn, get a Network Engineering job, or go to a GOOD school. If you want to pass a test, then read the book(s), and study the practice exams. There's no short cuts around either road. This book, by Gary Donahue, promises to bridge that missing link between the classroom and the server room. I haven't read all of it of course (I just got it today), but I had breezed through a digital copy of the book before I actually bought a physical copy from Amazon. This book is 1.25 inches thick and comes with a 45-Day access to the digital version from Safari. However, there just is no comparison between a solid book you can hold in your hands and a digital book. A REAL book is something you can mark with notes and highlights - that's how you can truly own a book. But I also live in a small apartment in New York City, so shelve space is also an issue. Plus digital books make great reference materials, searches take seconds. It's a balance, there is no panacea for all situations. My order from Amazon.com came in TWO days, and I only chose the FREE Super Saver Shipping option, so I didn't even pay extra. Only the New York sales tax (Arrgh!). I'm very happy with my purchase, and is very pleased with the U.S. government for building the internet for Amazon.com to do business in. I'm giving this book FOUR stars, because there is not even a single mention of "ROLLOVER cable" in it. Yes, I am deliberately being picky.
