• The Best Css Book, Bar None 10 December, 2008
As a professional software developer, I'm a fussy reader, and I rarely find technical books that satisfy me. They're either unimaginatively verbose, listing every combination of elements instead of discussing the underlying principle so you can generate your own combinations, or they're "dumbed down" in ways that are not helpful, or they're overly chatty, or incomplete, etc.
So when I find a book like this, it makes me very, very happy! When picking a CSS book to buy, I sat in Barnes and Noble for half a day reading every CSS book they had (perhaps about 20 books), and there was really no comparison, this book was so much clearer, more useful, insightful, etc... every superlative I can think of :)
And since buying it it has become my go-to resource for all CSS work... CSS has many quirks and subtleties, and this book is filled with little inside tips and sensible explanations of things that had always puzzled me before, from someone who's clearly been doing this a very long time.
If you're just looking for straight copy-paste code samples, there are thicker books that will provide more examples to imitate... but if you want to actually understand what you're doing and learn how to make examples of your own, then for me this book is the best, bar none.

• This Is The Real Deal 26 December, 2008
I'm designing my first commercial web site in years and really needed some help. Web technology has exploded since I wrote HTML 10 years ago. I didn't get much farther than installing joomla when I realized CSS was going to be a nightmare without some training and/or some prescription drugs.
I received this book on Christmas Eve (2008) and could NOT put it down.
The author does a great job of keeping the big picture in mind with page layout diagrams while diving into each of the chapters' subjects. He also uses frequent examples and tutorials where he skillfully focuses your attention on specific line changes and the resulting browser behaviors so you don't get lost in the details. I enjoyed the whole book, but especially enjoyed the sections on float-based layouts and positioning individual elements.
Having read the book, I now feel ready to dive into my project. Thanks David, for the exceptional programming book in a sea of mediocrity. This one is a keeper.

• Excellent Book For Learning Css. Very Highly Recommended! 25 October, 2008
I purchased this book with the need to learn CSS. Initially I thought that meant simply learning its syntax. This book does that well, but also goes much further to give the reader a deeper understanding of why you want to use CSS and how to apply it.
Mr. McFarland has done an excellent job of explaining the "why" and "how" of using CSS to build effective web sites. He does this with a combination of useful examples, helpful illustrations, pointers to useful resources, and an entertaining writing style. I appreciated the many tips and tricks which have helped me in the real-world application of my new skills. As a matter of fact, this book just helped me to resolve a nasty IE bug that was driving me crazy. Very highly recommended! (The book, not IE bugs.)

One of the main reasons I purchased this book was to grasp the box model and its implementation on a fundamental level. Rest assured this book is no dissapointer. The concept was clearly explained, and clear examples were provided.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in the finer nuances of CSS.
The book also contains a thorough review of the basic concepts.
