Product Description
New York Times bestselling author Vince Flynn returns with his most explosive political thriller yet. A tour de force of action-packed suspense, Protect and Defend delivers an all-too-realistic and utterly compelling vision of nations navigating the minefield of international intrigue. A true heavyweight in the political thriller arena (Minneapolis Star Tribune), Vince Flynn has created a flesh-and-blood hero that readers can cheer for and a finger-blistering page-turner they won t dare put down.

In Protect and Defend, the action begins in the heart of Iran, where billions of dollars are being spent on the development of a nuclear program. No longer willing to wait for the international community to stop its neighboring enemy, Israel launches one of the most creative and daring espionage operations ever conceived. The attack leaves a radioactive tomb and environmental disaster in the middle of Iran s second largest city. An outraged Iranian government publicly blames both Israel and the United States for the attack and demands retribution. Privately, Iran s bombastic president wants much more. He wants America and Israel to pay for their aggression with blood.

Enter Mitch Rapp, America s top counterterrorism operative. Used to employing deception, Rapp sees an opportunity where others see only Iranian reprisals that could leave thousands of Americans dead. Rapp convinces President Josh Alexander to sign off on a risky operation that will further embarrass the Iranian government and push their country to the brink of revolution. As part of the plan, CIA director Irene Kennedy is dispatched to the region for a clandestine meeting with Azad Ashani, her Iranian counterpart.

But Rapp isn t the only one hatching plans. Iranian President Amatullah, has recruited Hezbollah master terrorist Imad Mukhtar to do his dirty work. For decades Mukhtar has acted as a surrogate for Iran, blazing a trail of death and destruction across the Middle East and beyond. When Kennedy s meeting with Ashani goes disastrously wrong, Rapp and Mukhtar are set on a collision course that threatens to engulf the entire region in war. With the clock ticking, Rapp is given twenty-four hours, no questions asked, to do whatever it takes to stop Mukhtar, and avert an unthinkable catastrophe.

Customer Reviews:

 • Another Rapp Thriller
02 September, 2008

Reading Flynn's Mitch Rapp books always heartens me, because I hope our government has a couple of Mitch Flynn types out there who cut through the B.S. and take down the bad guys. And I suspect we do. I found this book one of Flynn's best efforts, one which did not strain credulity too much, like so many spy thrillers do. As usual with a Mitch Rapp book, once you start you can't put it down. The plot is straightforward, laced with fascinating information on our military/intelligence resources, and although the characters are almost caricatures, they work in this book at least. All in all, it's a good, quick read.

 • Mitch Rapp On The Warpath Again
25 August, 2008

Fete of Death I found the first half of "Protect and Defend" slow going--with the exception of the beginning sequence which starts out with a bang in the Isfahan nuclear facility in Iran's second-largest city. Then the story lags and doesn't pick up till CIA director Irene Kennedy is kidnaped as she's on a mission in Iran. With that the action thunders along hell-for-leather with Mitch Rapp pulling out all the stops to free her from her sadistic captors. Rapp kills and tortures anyone who gets in his way when he attempts to save her from being tortured herself. Vince Flynn has done his research to a fare-thee-well and his sources seem reliable. If anything, the book may be a little too bogged down with research for its own good and might have been a more fast-paced thriller had it been pared down and streamlined. --Bryan Cassiday

 • Get Out Of The Way
07 September, 2008

Vince Flynn continues to feed readers' fantasies by having Mitch Rapp make decisions (or force those with the highest authority to make decisions rather than seek the easy way out), by pointing out how power corrupts among those who serve high officials, by making terrorists a real threat to our nation and not merely a group that "needs to be understood," and by seeking retribution against those human beings who are truly evil. The episodes revolving around Director Irene Kennedy are especially exciting. I gave it four stars because I liked CONSENT TO KILL AND ACT OF TREASON even better.

 • Mitch Rapp Rocks!
21 August, 2008

I've read all of Flynn's Mitch Rapp thrillers and they are excellent. They are gritty, real-life characters that tell it like it is. As a fellow author of thrillers, I appreciate his attention to detail and his exhaustive research. He teaches me how to write the genre. If you're concerned about Iran's nuclear threat, then you'll love this novel! --Skip Coryell-- Author of the world's first geopolitical redneck thriller "We Hold These Truths" We Hold These Truths
