Amazon.com Review The Certified Computer Technician title--otherwise known as A+ Certification--is one way to document your technical skills for your résumé, and A+ Certification for Dummies is a painless way to prepare for the tests. It also serves as a wonderful primer for anyone who wants to learn more about computers. The book begins with an introduction to basic electronics and to the numbering systems relevant to computer processing. This opening section also covers the tools and techniques you need to know when working on computers. Next, author Ron Gilster builds your hardware knowledge from the bottom up with chapters on motherboards, memory technology, disk and other storage options, bus structures, and power supplies. Discussions of input and output devices, I/O ports, printers, and basic networking follow. Further on, the author explains how to work on computers, install new options, and implement upgrades. Gilster also discusses how to deal with customers--often a bigger challenge than diagnosing the hardware problem--and covers the DOS/Windows platform and diagnostic techniques. An included CD contains study software and hundreds of practice questions. Whether you are preparing for the A+ exam or simply want to get a clue about how computers work, this title covers the basics well. --Stephen W. Plain

Not Worth The Paper It Is Printed On. 02 June, 2006 The information in this book is worse than incomplete. The practice questions in the book and on the CD are nothing like those on the EXAM. There are many practice questions that are poorly worded, and have WRONG answers. There are also many questions with TYPO's. Example there was a question comparing DIMMS and RIMMS, but all the the answers referenced SIMMS. Stay away from this please!!!!
Jokes are not funny and if this book was written by an 30 year + IT professional... well frankly that is sad. He should have had to knowledge and resources to create a book that is accruately geared toward the exam. Like other for dummy books, this book was probably written by underpaid, barely expierenced kids, with a limited review process as to maximize publisher profits.
If you are taking this exam I suggest that you obtain study materials from Testking or Realexams. Stay away from this book, it will not help you pass. The information it concentrates on such as DMA/IRQ/BIOS settings/codes etc., can be found for free on the internet.
In retrospect, I would buy this book only if they didn't charge me, and shipped it for free. At least I have a coaster for my drinks at work.

Ok For Intro, Average Resource For Actual Test. 14 December, 2006 This book was OK for beginners to get acquainted with actual computer hardware and its inner workings, but NOT ENOUGH for the Core hardware 2003 test at least. I used this as my sole reference and I passed with a 674 (minimum 515 pass). Im not quite satisfied with that score. LUCKILY, I had LOTS OF BACKGROUND computer knowledge by myself and it helped greatly in passing the exam. If I had no background computer knowledge and solely used this book I would have failed miserably. The reason why this book is not good for exam: Many, MANY of the A+ questions are actually real world scenario questions on "what would you most likely do" in a troubleshooting problem. and Many questions are on printers. This book does not have many real world scenario troubleshooting answers, but for the technicalities its ok. It said memorize IRQs and I/O addresses. BULL!!! None of that, if maybe one, was on the test. I hope someone can recommened to me a good book for the OS tech test!!

Passed My A+ Because Of This Book! 04 March, 2006 I had taken the hardware exam and failed it the first time around. Then a friend gave me the Mike Meyers' Passport book and this one. He highly recommended Passport but after reading the first chapter I was bored to tears. After reading this book, the only thing I had to complain about were the bad jokes. The presentation of the information is solid, and he takes his time explaining things. He also puts in bullet points for what you should concentrate on when studying. After reading this book 1 time from cover to cover I took the hardware again and passed it, and passed the software on the first try.
