A Revelation
24 February, 2009
This book is bringing me a fresh new appreciation of the Epistles. By putting the letters in chronological order, and then giving the background of what was occurring at the time a letter was written, makes it so much easier to properly appreciate the content of the letter. Very enlightening.

Context, At Last!
25 May, 2009
After reading Viola's "Pagan Christianity?", I was very interested in picking up a copy of this book. Glad I did! If a person is struggling with authenticity in their faith and in their understanding of the New Testament, I heartily recommend this work. It could just as easily have been titled, "The New Testament,in Context". An easy read to better inform one's understanding of scripture. Lot's of stars!

So That's Why
07 March, 2010
Loved the book so much. I have been involved with churches that have active home group ministries and I always wondered why I got so much more out of home group than I did from the church service. Now I know why. Home group is much more like what the early church was like. It was interesting to see where the church inherited so much baggage. After reading this book, I have changed the way we do church and try to get the congregation more involved in the service, rather than having chruch be a spectator sport. I imagine churches with multi-million dollar sanctuaries, choir robes, and a church full of people wearing suits and ties won't like this book very much.

The Untold Story-it's About Real People!
25 October, 2008
Brilliant book-Frank does it again! After reading the other reviews there isn't much left to say apart from the fact that after reading this you will find that you understand and empathise with all the people in the New Testament so much more-they literally spring to life as you read through. You will understand WHY they did and said the things that don't seem to make much sense to us in the 21st.Century.Can't wait to meet them!(well most of them anyway)
Thanks for taking the time and trouble to write it.

Disappointing
15 October, 2009
I have to admit, I was very disappointed by this book. I expected a lot more after reading "Pagan Christianity" "Reimagining Church" and the many positive reviews on this site. I expected my view of the NT to be completely revolutionized. But in my case, that just didn't happen. In fact, I feel that this book just doesn't live up to all the hype. There are several reasons why I didn't care for this book.
First, I thought this book was set up and written very strange. Many times, this book read more like a novel than anything else. I know this book was never intended to be a scholarly work, but I think this information could have been made a lot more interesting. I found myself getting bored. I also found the information to be repetitious, there was nothing new here. You can get the same information from the book introduction of any good study Bible. I expected to be underlining almost everything in this book, but the truth is, I underlined very little. There were a few things that I found interesting, but no where near what I expected. This book just wasn't able to hold my interest.
In my opinion, this is not one of Viola's strongest works. This book is okay. But in my opinion, there's nothing here that's earth shattering. My advice would be to skip this book and pick up a copy of "Pagan Christianity" instead.
