 • Terrible Service From Publisher, Bad Book For The Classroom.
18 January, 2003

First I used this book teaching a college class where its shortcomings could be somewhat overlooked, but then I tried it in a high school settting and it was a nightmare from day one. I'll never use it again anywhere else. The text material isn't too bad, even though both groups of students complained about it being too simple and repetitive. The teacher's CD and the exercises that are on the Internet for the students are TERRIBLE! One of the chapters on the teacher's CD was somehow sent out all in strike-thru font. NO quality control exists here. Each chapter has a series of exercises that the students are supposed to be able to do over the Internet. This was one of the best selling points of the book. But some of the exercises require a paid subscription to do, most don't work on Macintosh computers, some don't work on any computers, some lock the computers unexpectedly. Some questions are poorly worded and the questions are not really questions or even complete sentences. I telephoned the publisher very early in the semester and spoke to customer service and was told to send an email detailing the problems. I got NO response. Now the semester is over. I'll never use this book again or anything like it from this publisher. Plus there was another problem - some of the exercises were too much like games. At first I thought it would encourage the students, but I found the reverse side of the coin - it fostered a "game room" atmosphere in our computer lab and we had trouble keeping the students on task. Wheel of Terms was too much like Wheel of Fortune, etc. It may have taken some skill to win, but it took no skill to lose. After several correct answers - YOU LOSE! Or the computer locks after spending 40 minutes working a crossword puzzle. When taking some of the other exercises it didn't take the students long to figure out that they could just use the back button in the browser and change their wrong answers and re-submit the tests, so they could get a perfect score within a few minutes on the exercises without actually knowing the answers.

 • More Than You Ever Wanted To Know...
08 December, 2001

Just reviewing the table of contents engulfs you in the incredible number of areas that computers have touched our lives. This is far more than a textbook. It is the written portion of a multi-media presentation that attempts to touch on every facet of computing today - from how a mouse works to the ethical dilemmas posed by databases. The publisher provides a CD-ROM for instructors and a web site for students with pointers to hundreds of useful sites. This is the "complete" version, intended as the primary text for a three-credit college-level course. The publisher also offers "brief" and "introductory" versions more appropriate to use as a supplement or in shorter courses. The information is very up-to-date, but just missed the dot-bomb implosion of the web world and still maintains the "web can and will do everything in your life" entheusiasm of that brief era.If you are buying this book, you have probably had it assigned as a text for a course and have no choice but to purchase it. You will be rewarded with a rich source of information on every facet of computer technology. It would also be an excellent basis for an intense self-study program if you are willing to set aside a couple of hundred hours to absorb it all!
