Product Description
We wept at his Oscar-winning role in Marty...we gasped when he took on Frank Sinatra in From Here to Eternity...we were riveted by his compelling performances in The Dirty Dozen, Bad Day at Black Rock, and Ice Station Zebra...and we laughed at his television sitcom McHale's Navy. We loved all of Ernest Borgnine's many portrayals, but what did we know about the man behind the famous roles? Now for the first time, he tells us in his own words the fascinating story of his life in this witty, candid, and revealing memoir.

For more than fifty years, Ernest--or "Ernie" as he's known to his friends--has been one of the most recognized, celebrated stars in Hollywood as well as a respected, talented actor, and a living legend. Stretching from his childhood as the son of Italian immigrants to a spectacular career that is still thriving in his 91st year, from the early days of live TV to the voiceovers for The Simpsons and SpongeBob SquarePants, Ernie tells of the trials and tribulations on his road to fame, the friendships he shared with some of the silver screen's biggest stars, and the glamorous leading ladies he loved.

Acclaimed for his ability to play sensitive and tough-guy roles equally well, he was also famous for squaring off against some of Hollywood's most formidable actresses--including Bette Davis in A Catered Affair and Joan Crawford in Johnny Guitar. Recalling his experiences starring in classic movies such as The Poseidon Adventure, The Wild Bunch, and Escape from New York, he reveals personal insights and irresistible stories about cinema's greatest icons--including Spencer Tracy, James Stewart, Kirk Douglas, Montgomery Clift, Gary Cooper, Janet Leigh, Raquel Welch, Gene Hackman, Rock Hudson, Sammy Davis, Jr., Tony Curtis, Alan Ladd, Glenn Ford, and Burt Lancaster. And with characteristic frankness, he also talks about his off-screen loves and passions.

A must for every film buff, Ernie: An Autobiography is a fascinating memoir--filled with secrets, well-remembered details, and never-before-told stories--of a star who has thrived in the changing world of Hollywood for more than half a century, and endeared himself to legions of fans everywhere.

Ernest Borgnine is an Academy Award winning actor whose film and TV career has spanned more than sixty years. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Tova.

 • A Wonderful Read
12 May, 2009

Having just seen him in the final episodes of E.R., I couldn't resist picking up this book. I can't believe he's in his 90's and still out there acting. GOOD FOR HIM! Mr. Borgnine is a fine talent and, in reading this book, a pretty decent guy. The book reads like you are sitting with a favorite uncle at a family gathering hearing him tell stories about 'the old days'. It's a fine read and he truly is a gentleman when discussing some less than stellar people he's come across in his lifetime. I enjoyed this book. God bless him!

 • You'll Love Ernie
17 November, 2009

Ernest Borgnine writes exactly the way he talks and, that is what makes this book so fascinating! His early life and formative years were totally unknown to me. What a revelation. And, Ernie tells stories like real people tell stories - what you see is what you get. I loved him before reading "Ernie" and now love him more than ever. I highly, highly, recommend this book. A great and, too fast, read!

 • Great Story Of A Great Star
24 August, 2009

Mr. Ernest Borgnine has been entertaining us for over fifty years and I have been a great fan of his since I first saw him in 'Demetrius and the Gladiators', being a part of the 'Baby Boomer' era; I guess I have seen him in roles in a few movies and also his time with television. Other favourites of mine include: 'The Wild Bunch', 'From Here to Eternity', 'Bad Day at Black Rock', 'Convoy', 'The Poseidon Adventure' and of course, 'McHale's Navy' on television and in one of the two movies the television series created. Reading this book gave me an insight into Ernie the man, who became Ernie the film star. I think it reinforces that great people just don't suddenly become who they are, they have to work hard at it. I was particularly taken by Mr. Borgnine's humbleness as he writes and describes various people and situations in his life as he moved along a fascinating journey that sees him still going strong at Ninety-One years...I hope I can be as sprightly myself in another forty years! Reading of his various encounters with producers, directors and fellow actors and people in his private life left me admiring the man so much more for his honesty and plain good manners. Thank you for the last fifty years of films, Mr. Borgnine, I hope to see you in many, many more.

 • A Joy To Read!!!!!!!!!!
08 June, 2009

This book is the best celebrity autobiography that I have read! It's so positive and full of optimism. Most celebrity autobiographies are full of problems and down times. Not, "Ernie"! When he goes through tough times, he stays positive. He had some tough marriages but has now been married for over 35 years! It's a great story of hanging in there and never giving up and great things will happen, as they have for Ernie Borgnine. I also enjoyed his memories of so many movies and stars. There aren't great stars like Ernie Borgnine anymore. Today's stars just aren't important. You'll love "Ernie"!!!

 • One Of The Greats!
05 February, 2010

Ernie: An Autbiography is an unpretentious, entertaining and lively account of the life of Ernie Borgnine. Borgnine has done it all over the decades, and he recounts many of his experiences in television and movies with wit and charm. Many of the stories are laugh out loud funny and one gets the sense that he is a regular guy, unaffected by the pretenses of hollywood. We don't have many character actors like Ernie around anymore, but, thankfully, HE'S still going strong.
