Product Description
What if it was possible to combine energy and water in such a way that would contribute to the reversal of global warming and the restoration of the planet? What if it were possible to have a better quality of life, without having to give up anything? What if that plan made such economic sense that governments and large corporations would buy into it? As it turns out, it is possible to create an energy source by using key technologies that are already available. Most cities have enough rain and sun to meet their water and energy needs, simply by using technology we already have. Building on current mainstream trends in solar energy and wind power, Electric Water offers a clear vision of how the world's energy and water infrastructure could be transformed. The book provides: An outline of the major issues that need addressing, including global warming A fascinating explanation of key technologies in plain language A vision of business and job opportunities in restoration Real-life examples, such as the Louisiana Coastal Restoration program Websites for further information Unlike many other books on this subject, Electric Water uses accessible language to propose a workable plan for a revolutionary integration of technology and quality of life that will be of special interest to planners, engineers, and architects. Christopher C. Swan is a San Francisco designer, writer, and entrepreneur who specializes in infrastructure.

Fantasy Not Vision 07 September, 2008
This book is one man's fantasy about where we need go with electricity and water for a sustainable future. The book is very readable and offers food-for-thought and some interesting ideas. But mostly it is another anti-nuclear and anti-utility book that offers little in real factual information and is frequently misleading.
Real solutions to the challenges facing us moving to a sustainable energy future will not be found by glossing over the technical and financial difficulties. Be sure to balance this book with others that provide detailed information of solar, wind, and nuclear technology.

Raising All Boats In The Long Emergency 30 June, 2008 ELECTRIC WATER is for investors and survivalists alike. Using building- block and off-the shelf approaches, Christopher Swan steps briskly thru, in an upbeat way, ways & means to make our way thru the Deadly Twin Challenges, Peaking Oil & Climate Change. Better than futile efforts to hedge one's way thru societal collapse with gold & guns, ELECTRIC WATER uses Civil Engineering, not fear.
Villages work here, independent & localized economies; a workable continuum of life with mobility is presented. Using renewable electric generation at a residential and local scale, with unwieldy grid-based large power generation phased out over time, Swan shows the numbers to support his thesis. His book will grow on us, on our body politic, as we seek better solutions than food production traded for auto fuel, and complcated technofix that is too expensive & too long in coming. The Peaking Oil impacts on financial markets and food supply are upon us.
ELECTRIC WATER is must reading for political staffers charged with producing briefing papers, political parties putting planks on platforms, and political wannabes looking for affordable solutions that work without Big Brother's supervision. If you read Richard Heinberg & James Howard Kunstler, you need ELECTRIC WATER for a chaser!
