Essential Reading For Those Interested In Modern Valve Amplifiers 07 January, 2008 Toroidal output transformers are an essential part of a new generation of high-end valve amplifiers, and Vanderveen designs, with Amplimo and Plitron, are most significant in this development, so the book comes from a very authoritative source. It covers all aspects of power amplifier design and construction very well, but is also worth a read by consumers of valve amplifiers, not just constructors. The writing style is excellent, the diagrams very clear, and the whole thing is helped by relating the way a design was developed - what had to be changed - and why. Some issues that are controversial amongst the audiophile community, such as negative feedback and which brand of which valve sounds best, are tackled without fear, concisely and without proselytizing. However, the negative side of toroidal transformer designs is not really covered, neither their sensitivity to current imbalance in push-pull configurations, nor discussion on why some parts of the audiophile community prefer old-technology transformers. That omission does not matter, nor the lack of an index; this remains a very, very good book!
