Good For Staging....
08 September, 2009
I was hoping for more of a DYI how-to in remodeling to fix my house up for sale. The hands-on of re-doing cabinets, painting, tiling, etc. Still looking for that type of book. I will probably go back to this book when it comes to staging but I have a ways to go before I get to that.

Not As Good As I Was Hoping It Would Be....
10 January, 2010
Not as good as I was hoping it would be. This book wastes a great deal of time having home stagers brag how successful home staging is. Surely the reader thinks staging worth a try since they've purchased the book, so it's preaching to the choir.
The pictures and text don't match - for example, the text says limit the number of items on the mantel to three and later uses a picture of a mantel with several items as a 'good' choice. This happens over and over. Plus all the pictures appear twice - once in black and white and again in color (obviously a later addition to the book).
Staging advice consists of ideas such as - place a mirror in the foyer so the buyer can see himself and imagine himself in your home. I asked a psychologist about this one and he said it's 'reaching.' Wish it all were really that easy.
If you buy only one staging book, don't make it this one.

Good Info, But Poorly Written And Very Low Quality Publication
14 January, 2010
There are definitely some good tips here, some of which are common sense but some information that inexperienced home sellers (like myself) can definitely benefit from. But I was distracted from the good advice by the extraordinarily low quality of this book. There are typos and grammatical errors EVERYWHERE! The editing was nonexistent, or done so shoddily that it was a distraction to the content of the book. And the "full-color photo insert" is laughable - amateur photos taken by homeowners themselves, or possibly by their realtors, showing before & after photos which may have been helpful, if they weren't of such poor quality and so small that it's difficult to see anything. If you're looking for examples of colors, decoration, layouts, etc., these photos are not helpful in the least.
But the overall information is useful, even though the quality of this book is very poor, the chapters are organized somewhat haphazardly, and much of the information (e.g. step-by-step instructions on how to remove wallpaper, or fix a toilet, or a hundred other home improvement projects) is best found elsewhere in more detail.
Worth checking out of a library? Yes. Worth buying yourself? No.
