Extra Class 09 April, 2008 I'd suggest the ARRL over this book. Essentially, it covers the question pool, which can be done online. The ARRL book actually covers the material.

Amateur Extra Class Test Prep 01 October, 2007 Gordon West is a knowlegible, well-versed instructor in electronic communication. This book is as good as all his others. Supperlatives to him. The only real problem with the approach to the current licensure is the difficulty in actually learning the material. I have a good memory, and am a "test taker." I will be able to pass the extra test with the material in this book, but I am not sure I will Know It. But, with this book, you WILL pass with ease.

Pass The Test With Gordon West 24 June, 2008 After passing the Technician and General exams with Gordon's assistance in his prep books and CDs for these licenses, I ordered both for the book and CDs for the Amateur Extra, Element 4. As the current question pool expires on June 30, 2008, I was taking a chance on being able to complete the study - almost 800 questions - and pass the test before the change of questions. I read the book, highlighting questions, answers and Gordo's memory tips on the ones that gave me trouble. The CD's were invaluable as they allowed me to use daily commuting time to listen to Gordo's explanations and memory joggers. On June 18, I passed the Extra Class test easily. If want to get your ham ticket, trust Gordo!

People Still Study With Books? 26 July, 2008 There's nothing particularly wrong with the book - it's pretty much just a list of the FCC questions and their answers. For what it is, it's fine, and it can be useful if you're somewhere and have some free time to study and are nowhere near a PC. But, since most of us ARE near PCs most of the time and, I assume, since you're reading Amazon, are computer literate, the bigger problem is that, well, this is a dead tree book where software is much better suited for this sort of study, especially as the author here provides very little to supplement the FCC questions. To wit, some guy here praised the book stating that he prepared for a few hours per night and was ready in SIX WEEKS. To be honest, I passed my extra test after about a week of study using a software based tool that I found off the web.
The book would be slightly redeemable if it had more content. As it doesn't, it's basically a static reprint of the FCC question banks that are out there. If you really want to study using a dead tree, then by all means, this is good enough. I think most of us have moved on from this approach though.
