Product Description With youthful enthusiasm, eighteen-year-old Friend Pitts Williams absorbed the world's fair of 1893 and candidly recorded his illuminating and sometimes romantic observations in this diary. As did millions of others, he traveled by train to Chicago and immersed himself in the captivating sights and events of the greatest world's fair—the watershed and record-breaking World's Columbian Expositon, popularly called "The White City." His insightful record is illustrated with 270 photographs that the authors have carefully selected from their extensive Columbian Exposition reference library which exactly match the scenes the young man describes.

To Have Experienced It All! 11 January, 2004 The written descriptions and frank comments in Friend Pitts Williams' diary of his trip to the World's Columbian Exhibition in Chicago in 1893 conjures in the reader's imagination the sights that young Friend encountered. Dybwad and Bliss artfully supplemented the text of William's delightfully fresh diary with over 275 photographs and images of most all of the exhibits, buildings, displays, and galleries that Williams encountered on his trip. The reader gets a sense of the sheer magnitude and grandeur of this phenomenal exhibition which occured near the turn of the last century. Now all that remains is the din of voices, music, and machine; the smells and tastes of exotic foods, popcorn, and confections; and the summer breeze of the "windy city." Oh, to have experienced it all!
