Product Description
In Student Nurse, Cherry starts nursing school at Spencer with a mixture of anxiety and anticipation - would she have what it takes to be a nurse?

In Army Nurse, Cherry has made the difficult decision facing all her classmates - should she enlist in the military or practice nursing on the homefront? She's graduated from Spencer and earned the right to put "RN" after her name, and as an Army nurse, she is now "Lieutenant Ames." The Army nurses are also soldiers, and endure a grueling basic training under the harsh Sergeant Deake (whom Cherry nicknames "Lovey," much to his chagrin). No one knows where the Spencer unit will be deployed until they are shipped off without warning - to Panama City. Who is the mysterious old Indian whom Cherry and her corpsman Bunce find collapsed in an abandoned house? He is obviously very ill, but with what? Can Dr. Joe's newly developed serum help?

In Senior Nurse, Cherry realizes that "a senior really must be a little more sober and responsible" - perhaps she should have warned the head nurse right away about the rabbit that had been smuggled into the pediatric ward. But the children had enjoyed it so...

In Cherry Ames, Chief Nurse, Cherry is whisked off to a new assignment on an island in the Pacific close to the battlefront - as Acting Chief Nurse! Colonel Pillsbee thinks she is too "young and pretty" to successfully supervise sixty nurses and 200 corpsmen. Can she do it?

This book set is both appropriate for teens and adults to read. If you are interested in nursing you will probably be interested in these books.

 • Every Girl Should Read This Wonderful Series!
07 December, 2006

What a delight to rediscover our courageous nurse Cherry Ames all over again! Let Cherry take us back to an era of simple virtues where honesty and integrity mattered. Cherry Ames is a series most of us baby boomers remember reading, along with Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden, Vicki Barr, Dana Girls, Bobsey Twins, Hardy Boys and the like. A true treasure to explore and pass on to our own children or just to read and discover the magic of series books all over again. I would recommend these books to any young girl and I am delighted to see my old friend and nurse Cherry again.

 • Good, But Better At First
15 May, 2008

The Cherry Ames novels tend to be a little less interesting as they go on. I still think the first four are the best. They still show the variety of possibilities available to nurses, most of which are still options today. Even though I am a physician, I was still surprised by some of the options available to nurses that I hadn't thought of. As a physician, it's interesting to see a historical snapshot of medicine in the 30's-40's. These stories appealed to me as a young girl when I found them on an aunt's shelves, and they are still fun to read.

 • Retro Detective Nurse Series Makes A Comeback
17 December, 2007

Cherry Ames makes a comeback. Fresh, lively confections that enthralled me as a kid don't hold up quite as well to the adult reader, but that's not the point. Mystery Writers of America member Helen Wells fleshed out a peppy prewar characterization of a high-spirited eighteen year-old nurse whose high-spirited, curious ways get her in entertaining fixes as she pursues her nursing degree and a few dreamy doctors. I bought the first few books at a garage sale in the early 80's for 25 cents and they still have a place of honor on my bookshelf. The later books tended to have a churned- out, formulaic quality with a bevy of different writers who can't capture the zeitgeist. I think today's kids would definitely have a snoozefest with these books. In addition, my mother, who graduated from nursing school in the early 60's, tried to get through the first book, but couldn't. I guess there weren't enough draconian spinster teachers, full shifts on the floor, and egomanical doctors for that realistic kick!

 • Great Memories
19 August, 2008

I just purchased the complete set of the Cherry Ames nurse stories that were written by Helen Wells. The packaging was beautiful and the covers looked exactly as I remember. I enjoyed reading about Cherry's adventures again as much as I did when I was a young teen. I would also like to purchase the Cherry books written by Julie Tatham when Ms. Wells took some time off. I purchased Cherry Ames at Spencer and it was great. I hope others will enjoy them as much as I have. The sets are also very reasonably priced.
