Product Description
In this explosive new thriller, one of the most incredible and frightening discoveries mankind has ever faced is about to surface.

On an oil platform in the middle of the North Atlantic, a terrifying series of illnesses is spreading through the crew. When expert naval doctor Peter Crane is flown in, he finds his real destination is not the platform itself but Deep Storm: a top secret aquatic science facility, two miles below on the ocean floor. And as Crane soon learns, the covert operation he finds there is concealing something far more sinister than a medical mystery-and much more deadly.

 • Solid Thriller
06 February, 2010

"Deep Storm" is a solid and serviceable techno/scifi-thriller. The characters are not deep, but the story is both engaging and exciting, and I was very motivated to read it all the way through. Lincoln Child's story is of a secret submerged deep water facility built to uncover a mysterious energy source. Dr. Crane is asked to join the effort in order to uncover a series of illnesses sweeping through the employees of the facility (scientists and military). I've read Preston and Child before - "Ice Limit" and "Riptide" I found to be particularly good. The characters, I felt, were much stronger in those stories. But it didn't matter in "Deep Storm". The book is a very quick read, heavy on action and science. As long as you can live without strong characters, I'd recommend this well-written and exciting book.

 • Interesting Premise, Everything Else Is Formulaic
15 January, 2010

I've been a fan of the Preston/Child books ever since Relic was new, and I've enjoyed some of their solo novels as well. The central mystery here and its explanation are very interesting, but the characters are two-dimensional and so chichéd that at times I wondered if I was reading a novelization of The Abyss. Even in his own previous works, Child has long since overplayed the tired old taciturn-security-type-becomes-paranoid-and-threatening character. Here, it's like he took the security guy from Mount Dragon or the treasure hunter from Riptide or the obsessed meteorite-extraction guy from The Ice Limit and put him in uniform and stuck him underwater. The story arc was predictable, and the whole thing had a very paint-by-numbers kind of feel to it. Child could have done -- and has done -- better.

 • A Page Turner.
11 March, 2010

I very much enjoyed the novel and found it difficult to put down. The story is well written and paced just right. On the other hand it is not a particularly new story, it has been told a time or two already. But, oh well, it was told again well.

 • Solid Techno-thriller
19 January, 2010

Lincoln Child, this time without his usual collaborator Douglas Preston, pens an interesting techno-thriller that is at certain stretches predictable, yet ultimately as a whole is a fully satisfying read. Peter Crane, a former U.S. Navy doctor, is summoned to a mysterious underwater research facility to help diagnose and treat a rash of psychological and physical problems affecting the crew. Racing against time, Crane must also confront an increasingly paranoid U.S. military presence onboard the facility. Readers will enjoy the vivid explanations and descriptions, a mix of science and speculative science, of the equipment used to live and explore in a deep sea environment. The novel definitely has a vibe that makes you feel like you're watching The Abyss (Special Edition) or Leviathan or Deep Star Six. Like a summer movie blockbuster, the plot moves at a swift pace and you don't need to wait long to get into the action. Readers might not enjoy a largely forgettable cast of characters that often exist only to keep the plot moving. Yes, the author does give us personal background for some characters but most aren't as memorable as an Aloysius Pendergast or Vincent D'Agosta. The protagonist is a uniquely talented doctor and an athletic veteran but doesn't leave a lasting impression. He fits a "rugged intellectual" archetype as neatly as several other characters fit their "eccentric intellectual" and "power-mad soldier" archetypes. The one unique character is Dr. Jeremy Logan, a character that never interacts with the rest of the main characters and inhabits a parallel storyline, but has an impact on the overall conclusion. Luckily Lincoln Child seems to be using Logan as a recurring character in many of his solo books since he subsequently makes an appearance in Terminal Freeze. Deep Storm is a fun sci-fi read. It isn't as exciting as some of Child's earlier works and eschews any supernatural elements but is worth picking-up for an exciting plunge into a deep ocean mystery.

 • A Must-read For Fans Of Child Or Preston
27 February, 2010

This book will forever be in my "automatic recommendation for friends" list. I picked it up after I read the synopsis and thought "deep sea hidden stuff, awesome!" -- boy was it. This is one of those typical page-turners that you crack open one Wednesday night to see if it's any good, and by 2am you have to put it down because you need sleep before work the next day. I've sent this book to 2 other friends since reading it and each of them have finished it in 1-2 days and had the comment "man, I just couldn't put it down!" It's a lot of fun, the characters are likable and the premise was awesome. I also thought this book carried the story with steam all the way through and didn't peter out at the end once the covers had been pulled back and the mystery revealed completely. A lot of books tend to do that, but not Deep Storm. If you like Child and/or Preston and enjoy those types of stories, there is *no reason* not to order Deep Storm and read it, you'll like it.
