Owning Your First Home
15 January, 2009
The text is focused on owning your first home not buying your first home. I wish this book had a chapter on buying a home and a deeper coverage of mortgage contract fine print and gotchas. The best part of this book is the informational snapshots.

Don't Buy A House Without It
18 December, 2008
Navigating the maze of new and often competing demands that owning a new home can bring along can be quite overwhelming. This is doubly so if one is trying to do it on one's own, without an informed help of a friend or a relative. Even so, there are many legal and practical hurdles that can get in the way, which even the most seasoned homeowner has not anticipated. For all such prospective and current homeowners, "The Essential Guide for First-Time Homeowners: Maximize Your Investment & Enjoy Your New Home" is an essential and useful guide. It covers all the basics of selecting and purchasing your first home, and guides you beyond the first weeks and months of ownership and helps you with useful tips on how to maintain your home so that its value may not decrease over time. The only objection that I have with the book is that it devotes one whole chapter to "greening" of your home. Most of the suggestions presented in that chapter are so outlandish ("get rid of the lawn"), impractical, or both for most residential areas, that it clearly detracts from otherwise well written and useful book. Even with that caveat, this is still a very good book to consider purchasing if you are seriously considering buying your first home. It could very well save you a lot of time and money in a long run.

Left Me Wanting More
15 January, 2009
This book gave good general advice but it left me wanting more details on the specific steps of putting an offer, closing, what to expect, statue of limitiations on time etc. It focused alot on permits, value on home remodeling, taxes etc, which is a good thing to, however, I wanted more concrete options.

A Good Primer
03 August, 2009
I can't say that I found much in the book that caused an 'aha!' moment. However, it does cover the things that new homeowners might be interested it. Give it a skim and keep it for future reference.
One thing that I found a bit annoying was the impression that I got several times that the book was written for a female audience.

A Great Guide For When Our Financial Situation Improves
30 January, 2009
My husband and I were planning on buying a house until the economy went down the tubes. Once it comes back (whenever that is) this'll be one of the resources we use to help us through the process. It may not be as thorough a book as some others, but for an introductory guide, it's exactly what we need. The information is well organized, with a lot of neat side features (Cookies! Organics gardening!) for fun. While it probably won't be the only resource we utilize, it gave us some good topics for conversation.
