Won't Help You Pass Comptia Certification Exam
19 August, 2009
I bought this book because it was used as part of my community college's class. I thought the book was okay as I was going through it (3 stars) but there are a (very few) typos and poorly written/insufficient passages that make reading certain parts a real slog. For one of the passages, I emailed the author - and the response was not useful, as if he didn't take a "learner's eye" to my question. Many times, I had to use internet resources such as Wikipedia to get better explanations of the material.
Many of the chapter projects use specific Microsoft implementations which I don't have, and in general, I found the remaining projects to be very weak support in increasing understanding of the material.
Since my college class has ended, I have taken and passed the CompTIA Security+ certification exam. I used other materials to prepare for the exam than this book. The CD included with this book is extremely weak in helping to prepare for the exam - truly, a waste of time. On the positive side since it is not extensive it doesn't take very long. And it is annoying in having typos, in particular, for the acronym HIDS. There are some questions where you must select "HDIS" as the correct answer when that text string has a typo.
As a side note, my college utilizes this author's "Cengage Learning" as courseware. For at least this Security+ topic, there's no value add to the student for accessing the site.
If I had it to do over again, I'd save the college tuition money and buy a different book from one of the big-name IT learning publishers and do self-study.

Book
16 September, 2009
This is a book about network security. It's in-depth, and informative. Like any good book out there, it has lots of pages. You can read these pages and learn information about things. Really cool.
Doesn't seem like it would break. It may be flammable, so watch out while you're smoking and reading it. I recall hearing a problem with moisture as well from another review. Pages' ink have a tendency to smear if wet. That can be avoided by not getting the book wet. Doesn't really stand up to bending. I had a dog-eared page in mine when it arrived. Almost returned it for being defective.
What do you want me to say?
It's a book. A pricey schoolbook. Would've been a fun review if I didn't NEED it and simply bought it on a whim.
In all seriousness, it's a really well written book with lots of great information. Helped me pass my class. BUY USED, SAVE COIN!

A Flawed Guide That Is Inadequate For The Exam
03 February, 2010
The text is required for my security class. If it wasn't I never would have purchased. Ciampa's guide to the exam is a lightweight, adequate neither as a crash course for the seasoned professional, nor as a thorough treatise for the novice. I can think of no audience for which this book is appropriate. Further, the book is in desperate need of formal review, every chapter has a handful of glaring omissions, errors or outright lies. It serves more to injure the security sector than it does to help. You will be better served by Greg White's CompTIA Security+ All-in-One Exam Guide, which I found in my own experience to be superior as both a prep for the certification and for real-world situations.

Excellent Resource. Scored High And Passed Security+ 2008
01 March, 2010
Mark Ciampa's Security+ Guide to Network Fundamentals 3rd edition, is an excellent resource for new users or novices who need to understand Security concepts and succeed. We used this as a college textbook, and worked exclusively from the book.
The book is a very easy read, and is written well. The book keeps things moving with the hands on labs and very easy to use. The end of chapter questions make it easy to solidify the chapter topics. The exam engine included in the book is very intuitive, and allows you to work on your weak areas by identifying the topics that need work.
Scoring 100% on all the chapter questions, and the CertBlaster exam engine allowed me to pass the Security+ 2008 exam with ease with plenty of time to spare. I highly recommend this book.
Note: To succeed in passing the exam, you must read, do the labs, understand your subject matter, and practice, practice, practice. No shortcuts here.
