Product Description
History explodes in this activity guide spanning the turmoil preceding secession, the first shots fired at Fort Sumter, the fierce battles on land and sea, and finally the Confederate surrender at Appomattox. Making butternut dye for a Rebel uniform, learning drills and signals with flags, decoding wigwag, baking hardtack, reenacting battles, and making a medicine kit bring this pivotal period in our nation’s history to life. Fascinating sidebars tell of slaves escaping on the Underground Railroad, the adventures of nine-year-old drummer boy Johnny Clem, animal mascots who traveled with the troops, and friendships between enemies. The resource section includes short biographies of important figures from both sides of the war, listings of Civil War sites across the country, pertinent websites, glossary, and an index.

Activites Are Very Good 19 May, 2007 This book is typical of people who do not understand the Civil War was not about Slavery. It was made into a war about slavery to keep European countries from recognizing the South. If that would have happened there would be a CSA today. There is a lot of history in this book that is very good, but it has the tendency of beliefs that are not true. The activities in this bood are most excellent and we have done some of them. These are actually as they could have been.

Wonderful Resource For Kids And Adults! 04 June, 2008 One of our best purchases for homeschooling this year. Good information in an easily readable format with interesting illustrations and activities for children to get a hands-on feeling for what was happening or the routines that were in place. We are all learning from the book so it is a great way to share history as a family and has provoked dinner time and car ride discussions as well -- and this with an 8-year-old! I would highly recommend.

Civil War For Kids 26 December, 2007 I needed a history book to complete a biography for my 8 year old autistic son. He is in the 3rd grade and needed to dress like a famous person in history. I don't know why but he wanted to be General Stonewall Jackson. Although it was too difficult for him to read (because of his disability) I was able to read it to him and get him to understand and remember the facts about Stonwall's life. There was a nice photo in the book and also sections of the book covered what the uniforms looked like, as well as projects you could do with children (i.e. make a drum). My son loved learning about Jackson. Also, it was very child friendly. There were no discussions or photos of gory battle pictures. It was a great book that I am sure we will reference in the future.
