Product Description
After Gretchen Becker was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 1996, she educated herself on every aspect of this chronic condition — by reading medical and scientific books and journals, talking with doctors and listening to her own body. In 2001, she marshaled everything she had learned as a "patient-expert" into the first edition of this book, which she has now completely updated and revised. The First Year®—Type 2 Diabetes uniquely guides you step-by-step through your first year with diabetes, walking you through everything you need to learn and do each day of your first week after diagnosis, each subsequent week of the first month, and each subsequent month of the crucial first year. In clear, concise, accessible language, Becker covers a wide range of practical, medical, and lifestyle issues, beginning with coming to terms with your diagnosis and then moving on to subjects including: Choosing the diet that is best for you The role of exercise Daily blood-glucose testing routines and understanding lab tests Medications and supplements Networking with others Insurance issues Traveling and socializing

Very Informative Overview On Type 2 Diabetes
03 January, 2010
After reviewing several books on diabetes, this was one of the first books I read after being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes over one year ago. Nearly 3 weeks had passed before I was scheduled to see the dietitian and receive a glucose meter. The author/patient was very informative and straight forward on what to expect. This book helped me to start changing my habits immediately and I was well informed before I had my first appointment. I have gained much more knowledge in my own research than what I received in a couple of appointments with medical professionals. It is definitely up to the individual to take control of this disease. I encourage you to seek information from sources that have had proven success managing diabetes. I have had great results in dropping my A1c as long as I keep starchy carbohydrates and sweets to the minimum recommended by the dietitian.

Excellent Resource For One Having Diabetes
21 March, 2010
Excellent book for the newly diagnosed or anyone who has diabetes. So much good information in terms easily understood by the average reader. I was so impressed with this book I bought one for a friend who has had diabetes for many years and one for my sister, who was diagnosed almost four years ago. Definitely worth the money. The seller was excellent. Books arrived in timely manner, wrapped securely, and in new condition.

Author Wants To Impress You With Supposed Knowledge

Supposed to be about type 2..... then WHY did she dwell so much on type 1. Much useless information..... not much to help you LIVE with diabetes!

Excellent Book
06 August, 2009
This book is one of the first that I read after being diagnosed with Diabetes. It provides a wealth of information and also indepth information so you really feel like you understand and do not have a cursory knowledge. I love the author's suggestion that you must be in charge of your health care. It is empowering and she tells you the tests that your doctor may not do that you should request and what information they provide. She teaches you how to test your own body's reaction to different foods.
I highly recommend this book.

Excellent

This is one of the best books on diabetes I have read. Becker is straightforward and explains the disease quite bluntly. It has helped me motivate myself to control my blood sugar and diet. After reading her book I have dropped my BG 90+pts
