Product Description
When Dr. Agatston set out to develop a palatable, safe diet to ensure the long-term health of his chronically overweight heart patients, he also caused an overnight sensation among South Beach's body-conscious beachgoers. Why? With Dr. Agatston's plan, you shed pounds fast-right from the waistline and belly. His scientifically proven program offers immediate results, helping dieters shed 10, 20, 30 pounds while radically changing their blood chemistry, reversing diabetes, and lowering high cholesterol. The diet works in three stages to change your metabolism and then maintain it, with a healthy assortment of meat and fish, cheese, healthy oils and nuts, vegetables, and even small amounts of carbohydrates and sweets. And it does all this without the dangerous long-term effects of the Zone, Atkins, or other severely restrictive diets, which is why The South Beach Diet earned the support of the American Heart Association, which has warned against many other popular diets. The diet will show you how to: -Shed pounds-without breaking a sweat (no mandatory exercise) -Banish frustrating cravings in 2 weeks -Forget willpower-diet relies exclusively on the physiology of appetite and metabolism

Amazon.com Review
The verdict is in: those simple carbs we've been living on are killing us. For good health, we've got to get our blood sugar under control and stop the incessant cravings. Or so says Dr. Arthur Agatston, author of The South Beach Diet. The first half of the book details the science behind the diet. Most of the explanations revolve around why things you thought were healthy—-orange juice, wheat toast, carrots—-are actually evil. To avoid blood sugar surges, Agatston created a modified carbohydrate plan, recommending plenty of high-fiber foods, lean proteins, and healthy fats, while cutting bread, rice, pastas, and fruits. Major differences from other diets include a lack of concern over portion size and a serious indifference to exercise. Feeling full while on a diet is a beautiful thing, but it seems odd that a cardiologist buries his exercise recommendations in a solitary sentence.

The last half of the book covers his three-stage plan; daily diets are mixed with recipes, some of which are from South Beach restaurant chefs. The most restrictive period lasts just two weeks, enough time to stabilize your urges and lose a few pounds; stage two adds fruits and a handful of other carbs, while stage three is meant to last the remainder of your life, with occasional lapses for white bread or birthday cake. While the diet is sound, the book could be better organized. The first half mixes scientific study with anecdote in a seemingly random way, while the mix of meal plans and recipes can be confusing. Still, the recipes are varied and tasty, and you'll never feel deprived, unless you currently happen to live by bread alone. --Jill Lightner

 • A Sustainable Low Carb Diet
03 March, 2010

The South Beach Diet was written by Dr. Arthur Agatston is a cardiologist from Miami Florida. The premise is that processed carbs make you fat, and cutting them out of your diet will make you thin. Agatston recommends a diet high in lean protein along with plenty of green vegetables, nuts, and modest amount of legumes. At first glance this diet might seem strikingly similar to the Atkins diet, however it has a few noted differences, which make it much more doable. First and foremost he does not advocate a diet high in saturated fat, and encourages eating only lean protein. The fats he does recommend are monounsaturated fats that can be found in olive oil and salmon. Also he recommends plenty of vegetables and a moderate amount of fruits and legumes later in the diet, with the occasional piece of whole grain bread allowed. South Beach Diet now offers an online program that provides personalized support, along with an interactive community and plenty of virtual tools. Pros Quick Weight Loss If you have the willpower to stick with it you can lose a ton of weight on this diet, and in a fast amount of time. It's not uncommon for people to lose 20 or more lbs on this diet in the first month. Cons Hard to maintain: Though the diet is far less restrictive then Atkins, it still may prove too tough for some to maintain over a lifetime. Bottom Line The South Beach Diet really does work when it comes to taking the weight off. The question is, can it be sustained over a lifetime? For some yes, for others....not so much. When it comes to low carb diets, this is the best option out there.

 • Not A "diet"
17 March, 2010

this diet is easy to follow because it never leaves you hungry! I am losing weight and staying satisfied. It's about learning to eat healthy. The "rules" are simple, although it can take several weeks to work out the kinks as you adjust to this new way of eating. I have more energy than ever, am not hungry and never feel deprived. I do, however wish the book was just a little more detailed on how the plan works. Joining the website forum is really helpful and well worth the small cost.

 • South Beach Diet
16 March, 2010

Before I bought this book I had a general idea about the concept of this diet. TThis book goes into detail about the reasons why others types of diets dont work and why this does. It made me understand more about the blood chemistry and how I can use it to my advantage. Appreciated the recipes in the back

 • Quick, Easy Weight Loss.
26 February, 2010

Lost 40 lbs in 6 weeks It works! I noticed a couple of posts here asking how do you stick to this plan? That's easy because staying or sticking to this diet is easy. So much variety. So many many choices. You feel real good on this plan. High energy and satiety. This isn't some low calorie, high carb, nutritionless program that looks great on paper but leaves you tired, hungry and tense and still fat. It is a program that is complete, provides good nutrition and you will feel great. I lost 30 lbs in 6 weeks and it was the easiest 30 lbs I have ever lost. Although I have lost weight on other programs, the results were always short lived and I couldn't stick to those programs either because of hunger pangs, irritablity or just lack of food choices---diets were boring. Not so with this program. And it's good for you too. Try it, you'll like it
