Amazon.com Review
Designed to catapult your body into a state of fat meltdown, Dr. Atkins's diet has taken America by storm. It targets insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. The bodies of most overeaters are continually in a state of hyperinsulinism; their bodies are so adept at releasing insulin to help convert excess carbohydrates to fat that there's always too much of the hormone circulating through the body. This puts the body into a bind; it always wants to store fat. Even when people with hyperinsulinism try to lose weight--especially when they cut fat but increase carbohydrate consumption--their efforts will fail. This is why Dr. Atkins refers to insulin as "the fat-producing hormone."

Dr. Atkins's diet is extremely low in carbohydrates, which helps to regulate insulin production and decrease circulating insulin; less insulin soon results in less fat storage and fewer food cravings. The diet is far from torturous, though--those who've tried it attest that hunger is not a part of this plan. Ninety percent of Dr. Atkins's patients--more than 25,000 of them--have experienced dramatic weight loss. The book includes recipes for such luscious, low-carb dishes as lobster soup, zabaglione, sea bass, and blueberry ice cream, and even includes a carbohydrate gram counter and menus.

 • Atkins Is A Dangerous Diet
15 February, 2010

I' ve been on every diet on the market, low-fat, low-carb, you name it. I was on Atkins for few years, I lost 20 pounds, but then gained the weight back. I' m now on "the Perfect 10 Diet" which explained to me why I gained weight by messing hormones and how this diet causes cancer. I do not know what kind of harm I' ve done to my body after all these years. My doctor appointment is next week.

 • Do Low Carb Diets Work Long Term?
24 February, 2010

Dr. Robert Atkins is considered the godfather of low carb diets. He first published his book Dr. Atkin's Diet Revolution in the early 1970's and later reintroduced it as Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution in the early 1990's. For many years the consensus among nutrition experts was that excess fat in one's diet caused excess fat in one's body. Atkins a cardiologist by training, turned this theory on its head, and said that carbohydrates not fat, were the cause for the epidemic in obesity. The diet Atkins recommended was low carb, high protein and high fat. This caused an uproar among the diet establishment, and has proven to remain controversial to this day. The basics of this diet are to initially remove almost all carbohydrates from your diet. This includes not only breads, pastas and cereals, but also fruits and only the least starchy vegetables. The purpose of this phase is to put your body in a state of ketosis, where your hunger is turned off, and you lose a dramatic amount of weight in a short period of time. After the initial two-week phase you are allow a wider range of vegetables, along with some legumes and some dairy. This middle phase is to last so long as you are losing weight. The final phase which is the lifetime maintenance phase, you are allowed a very slight amount of carbs so long as you do not begin to put on weight. Pros Fast Weight Loss: You can lose weight very quickly on the Atkins diet. Results of 10lbs or more of weight loss in the first week are not unheard of. Also your hunger levels are typically reduced to zero, because hunger is triggered by your blood sugar levels, which remain low without eating carbs. Cons Uncomfortable: Constipation, bad breath, jaundiced skin, and extremely low energy levels are all common complaints of those on the Atkins Diet, especially during the induction phase. Also a diet of almost all protein and fat becomes very monotonous and unappealing within a short amount of time. Bottom Line The reason this diet is still around and still talked about is because it works....in the short term. Try it for a week and you will definitely lose weight. Ultimately the diet is unsustainable, as most people find the food choices far too limiting, and end up quitting the diet at some point. In the end what is the point of doing anything, if it can't be sustained in the long term.

 • Dr Atkins
14 March, 2010

I read this book and found some interesting things: That according to the book carbs are bad for you and that fat is not. If this is true then why do so many nutritionist tell you to eat fruits and vegetables?

 • Very Educational, Even If You Are Not Looking To Go On A Diet, A Must Read!
12 February, 2010

Dr. Atkins makes so much sense! When I read this book I had many "ah ha" moments! I have heard a lot of critics complain about this diet being unhealthy, however when you read the entire book, you will see that it is actually very healthy. I think the critics did not read his book! If you think about it grains, while they occur natually, have to be processed to be eaten, which makes them less natural. While meat and vegetables and fruit can be eaten in their natural state, making them a more natural way of eating. Don't get me wrong, I love carbs and whole grains! I think they are okay to eat on occassion, but the main part of your diet should be vegetables, fruits and proteins. The best thing about the Atkins way of eating is that you can have your cake and eat it too! There are so many recipes out there that mimic what you would be giving up that you just do not feel deprived. Check out this site for an unbelievable recipe collection to go along with this book: (Don't worry it is all free - no ads, no gimicks) [...]
