Editorial Review / Publisher's Information:
Product Description This new addition contains the basic diet and is enhanced by new explanations of the underlying theories. There are seven new chapters.
Amazon.com Review Designed to catapult your body into a state of fat meltdown, Dr. Atkins's diet has taken America by storm. It targets insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. The bodies of most overeaters are continually in a state of hyperinsulinism; their bodies are so adept at releasing insulin to help convert excess carbohydrates to fat that there's always too much of the hormone circulating through the body. This puts the body into a bind; it always wants to store fat. Even when people with hyperinsulinism try to lose weight--especially when they cut fat but increase carbohydrate consumption--their efforts will fail. This is why Dr. Atkins refers to insulin as "the fat-producing hormone." Dr. Atkins's diet is extremely low in carbohydrates, which helps to regulate insulin production and decrease circulating insulin; less insulin soon results in less fat storage and fewer food cravings. The diet is far from torturous, though--those who've tried it attest that hunger is not a part of this plan. Ninety percent of Dr. Atkins's patients--more than 25,000 of them--have experienced dramatic weight loss. The book includes recipes for such luscious, low-carb dishes as lobster soup, zabaglione, sea bass, and blueberry ice cream, and even includes a carbohydrate gram counter and menus.

Atkins
13 August, 2009
This turned out to be a paperback version of the original 1992 edition, nothing 'revised' about it. It's in the pile for the yard sale. I'd borrowed a much more recent version, the one pictured, from the library and wanted my own copy. Worth a penny, yes. Too bad about the $3.99 shipping.

Excellent Condition

I love the diet. The book arrived in very good condition, though it seemed to take a long time. I guess that could be attributed to the postal service.

The Book That Started It All On My Way To Health And Longevity
01 November, 2009
While I probably can't add more value to these reviews by adding my own review, this one of my favorite books. I have struggled with obesity since the age of 6. Back in about 1999 or 2000, I heard of this diet on a news program and was intrigued, went out and bought the book, found it incredibly fascinating and started this way of eating almost immediately. I lost 80 pounds. It is the easiest diet in that if you follow the program, the weight falls off effortlessly even without exercise, however it is also the hardest diet because everywhere you go is tempting food like cake, cookies, and candy, so you really need willpower. Atkins goes into great detail about why too many carbs are bad for you and your health and why fat is NOT bad. Anybody that tells you this is unhealthy and nothing but a bacon and cheese diet did not read the book in its entirety and they are naive. Since starting this diet back then, I have always followed a low-carb way of life and always will, I usually stay under 60-80 grams of carbs a day. You can't just listen to the media about everything. The media puts things out there so frequently that people just believe everything as fact, when if they would take the time to research it, it is all false! I'm refering to many things: that eating this way is bad for you, your heart, your kidneys (furthest thing from the truth); that you need to eat low fat/low calorie to lose weight and/or be healthy (not true); that you need to eat low cholesterol (definitely NOT true); that you need to eat lots of fiber (not true); that cardio is good for you and/or that you need to do cardio to lose weight (not true); that stretching is good for you (not really true either). Research things before believing them people. Other recommended reads: The Cholesterol Myth, Protein Power, Primal Blueprint, The Schwarzbein Principle, Slow Burn.
