Meditation For Beginners
29 December, 2009
I bought the two-disk cd version of this insightful lecture and meditation.
Jack Kornfield is a clinical Buddhist psychologist who presents the teachings of the four noble truths combined with meditations to awaken the heart. In the second cd, Kornfield explains that the teachings of the dharma are meant to be practiced as a path of virtue or an awakening of the heart. As he presents the first noble truth, or the existence of suffering, he proceeds to explain that without this healing cannot take place. Therefor, the first meditation involves facing our suffering. Jack Kornfield further explains that 80% of the work achieved through the initial months of meditation retreats, etc involves facing one's own suffering and sense of inadequacy as well as fear. In this aforementioned meditation we are to feel the body or to note the sick or wounded places, places we have perhaps ignored, as well as those silent sorrows, fears, hurts, conflicts.
The second noble truth is our reaction to suffering - attachment, greed, hatred, delusion. Self-acceptance and forgiveness is half of meditation. The second meditation is then a powerful forgiveness meditation.
The third noble truth is the end of suffering, which he describes as "letting go into each moment with things as they are, with the reality of the present." Kornfield recommends that we not accumulate and grasp, for we do not truly own anything within this lifetime - it all transient and in process. The final question as one lay dying is not what one did or build, but "Was it a path with heart?"
The author proceeds to present a meditation on the state of Death - such as how there is constant death and rebirth - on the preparation to bring the mind to good deeds - to note the state of consciousness - to note how it effects the heart and mind.
"We cannot do great things in life. We can only do small things with great love." - Mother Theresa
For one to meditate properly, Kornfield says, one must become intimate with one's breath and body as well as heart and mind, and life and death. This instills freedom.
The fourth noble truth is the eightfold path, existing fluently throughout the law of karma, or, how we think and react creates our response.
Finally, under the best circumstances,
"It is this tenderness and liberation of the heart that results in real fearlessness, or, the ability to live in the world with the heart and compassion of a Buddha." -Trunghchen Rinpoche
Meditation for Beginners is an excellent work for beginning meditation as well as an introduction for Buddhist Psychology, a very exciting field. I also recommend A Quiet Mind, which has very diverse mediations and Radical Acceptance by Tara Brach. I enjoyed the wisdom in the various stories the author relates. Now we know through Buddhism a way to face our suffering and develop a wise heart. It definitely helped me understand the psychology of Buddhism.
