Product Description

For knitters, crocheters, and weavers ready to make their own yarn, this handy guide provides detailed instructions for spinning both on a spindle and a wheel, and offers a special section devoted to troubleshooting and wheel maintenance that keeps projects on track. It offers a comprehensive look at the various available fiber options, choosing and preparing each type of fiber for use, and crafting these materials into ready-to-work pieces. A final chapter on the various uses of spun yarn focuses on project planning, with definitions and context for measuring wraps per inch, determining yards for specific projects, and choosing a yarn size.

Customer Reviews:

 • Love It!
22 November, 2008

This is such a great book! If you get one spinning book, this is it. It covers everything, and has great step by step pictures. I haven't started spinning yet...but my new wheel is sitting here. I bought a Lendrum complete, and am thrilled the book features hands on examples using this wheel. I'm sure I'll be off to a good start with it....the other greatest source for learning is Rexenne from youtube ;)

 • New To Spinning? Cut-to-the-chase Crash Course In How To Do It!
16 June, 2008

I'm a new spinner and felt overwhelmed with the technical aspects of it when I decided to learn. What I needed was a "just the facts" kind of guide that would let me get started and not overwhelm me with nerdy technical stuff that passionate and experienced practitioners love to talk about. Start Spinning is definitely it! Based on the reviews here, I bought a copy and agree completely with the 5-stars that most of the reviewers gave it. It's like a teacher in a box. Great illustrations. Clear definitions of terms that you really need to know Does not overwhelm you with jargon that you will pick up later if you get seduced by the craft. Covers everything from basic spinning, plying and using your handspun to choosing a wheel, planning a project, buying and evaluating fleece for spinning. SIMPLE and CLEAR. And not too much information. I love this book and would recommend it to anyone curious about the craft of spinning and wanting a good reference guide.

Loved this book as a new spinner. Lots of photos and how to find a wheel thats right for you was very helpful, This book is informative with out talking down to the reader and also helped me with my overspinning problem and how to trouble shoot difficulties. Photos were great and it covers all the bases. A+++

 • The Start Of A New Addiction?
03 October, 2008

I'm thinking about learning to spin, and this book gave me a good overview of what's involved, plus enough detail to make me feel confident that I COULD actually do it. Pictures are very clear, and the explanations thorough. Now...wonder if I'll actually give it a try. Thanks to Maggie Casey for sharing her knowledge in this excellent way.
