Editorial Review / Publisher's Information:
Product Description #1 New York Times bestselling author Nelson DeMille delivers the long-awaited follow-up to his classic novel The Gold Coast.
When John Sutter's aristocratic wife killed her mafia don lover, John left America and set out in his sailboat on a three-year journey around the world, eventually settling in London. Now, ten years later, he has come home to the Gold Coast, that stretch of land on the North Shore of Long Island that once held the greatest concentration of wealth and power in America, to attend the imminent funeral of an old family servant. Taking up temporary residence in the gatehouse of Stanhope Hall, John finds himself living only a quarter of a mile from Susan who has also returned to Long Island. But Susan isn't the only person from John's past who has reemerged: Though Frank Bellarosa, infamous Mafia don and Susan's ex-lover, is long dead, his son, Anthony, is alive and well, and intent on two missions: Drawing John back into the violent world of the Bellarosa family, and exacting revenge on his father's murderer--Susan Sutter. At the same time, John and Susan's mutual attraction resurfaces and old passions begin to reignite, and John finds himself pulled deeper into a familiar web of seduction and betrayal. In THE GATE HOUSE, acclaimed author Nelson Demille brings us back to that fabled spot on the North Shore -- a place where past, present, and future collides with often unexpected results. (2008)

Third DeMille book that I have read: Gold Coast, Plum Island (not so much). Really liked Sutter's humor. DeMille must be a pipp to live with!

The Gate House By Nelson Demille
19 February, 2010
I have read all of Nelson DeMille's books and have enjoyed every one of them. This book was no exception. It had me chuckling throughout. His main character, John Sutter, is much like John Corey, the main character in another series of DeMille books (Plum Island, Lions Game, Wild Fire). The book is adventurous and humorous at the same time. An excellent read.

Easy Suspense Style

Chosen because it was a book club selection but I am so thankful the ladies introduced me to DeMille. Everyone said it wasn't his best work, so I'm going to find some other selections but I liked it. It started out really interesting but kinda flattened out midway. Then picked up towards the end. All in all, I liked it.

Funny, Enjoyable, Not Thrilling.
16 March, 2010
I loved the Gold Coast and just about every book that Demille has written. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but not for the usual reasons. Compared to any of his thrillers with John Corey or his other characters, this book is mild. The entire "edge of your seat" thriller part of the book lasts about 10-20 pages near the end. That's it. The rest is a cute tale about John Sutter returning to New York after a 10 year absence due to the events that were covered in the Gold Coast novel. In case you didn't read that one, they cover those events in great detail in this book, so you don't have to read that one first. Anyways, it is enjoyable because John Sutter is such a fun character and a complete wise ass. It is such fun to listen to his thoughts and the outrageous things that he says.
I highly recommend the book to those who like good characters and enjoy a good storyline. I also recommend it to any Demille fans because it has his signature wit. For someone who has been reading hard core thrillers like Connelly, Patterson, Kellerman, Brown, etc (my other favorite authors), then I recommend that you start with one of Nelson Demilles more exciting novels. My personal favorite is Wildfire. THAT will blow your mind away.

I Like Demille, But Not This Book
28 February, 2010
I have read most of DeMille's stuff and he is, generally speaking, one of my favorite novelists. If you are satisfied purely by DeMille's humor, wit and unique first person writing style, this book will leave you fulfilled. If you are looking for a plot, you will not find one. It is a continuation of the Gold Coast in theory, but the element of danger is contrived and with the exception of one chapter, it is void of suspense. If you like DeMille, these detractions could be overlooked, but at nearly 700 pages, there were way too many wasted chapters for me. If I hadn't been on vacation, I probably wouldn't have finished this book, and that would have been a first for one of DeMille's.
