Product Description
Crochet is not just about ponchos and scarves anymore: it’s about amigurumi, a hip new craft trend! These Japanese-inspired dolls have motivated crocheters everywhere to grab their hooks and create collections of irresistibly funky-cute creatures. Elisabeth Doherty, one of today’s hottest amigurumi designers, is here to show readers how they, too, can get in on the fun. She explains basic and advanced stitches; shows how to make the critters’ forms by crocheting in the round; gives advice on yarns and stuffing; and offers tips on embroidering facial features and embellishments. Start with an easy cupcake, move on to a palm-sized mouse, and work up to the more challenging and spectacular projects, like a punk rock bunny or a beatnik kitty—complete with black turtleneck, beret, and goatee.

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced crocheter, this is a great book. Cute patterns and they are easy to read and understand.

 • The Best Book Yet
18 April, 2008

I bought three books on amigurumi. This is the third one and I'm more pleased with this one than the others. First, the author is very conversational which makes the reading enjoyable. The patterns move from easy to difficult and the reader is highly encouraged to progress from the front to the back in order to add skills as they go. There are some silly items like crocheted hamburgers and fruits and vegetables, but the rest of the designs are absolutely adorable. Rather than sticking with small animals with huge heads, like the Kyuuto book (which is a great book, nonetheless), and rather than all of her designs having the same basic look, like Amigurumi World (which I love, by the way), the author has put together a varied collection of patterns that not only challenge, but appeal to all types of different people. The humanoids are, in a word, awesome, and they open the door for all would-be designers to go beyond "cuteness" and into other realms of 3-dimensional crochet. I'm a long time knitter, but a very beginning crocheter, and contrary to some of the other reviews, I thought the directions were extremely clear. I learned quite a lot about crochet just from the text. The only thing I would add would be charts rather than strictly text directions, but that's a personal preference. Have I said that the patterns are amazing? I went to Flickr and Etsy and looked at some of the pictures of what people have made by adapting the designs in this book and it's truly astounding what a single pattern can spark. I also looked at the author's own pictures on the internet and she is more brilliant than her pattern book. It looks as if her well of creativity is far from dry, so I'll be looking for another book from this author. I'll buy it!

 • Crochet Amigurumi - Excellent Book
29 April, 2008

Excellent book for anyone wanting to make crochet Amigurumi. The first part of the book is dedicated to giving very clearly written & illustrated "how to" for crochting in general, along with excellent explainations about yarn types and supplies. In my opinion, this is a must-have book~

 • Lovely, Moderately - Easy Patterns
08 October, 2008

If you love creating toys, dolls, etc. buy this book! It's helped me to crochet VARIED toys for my grandchildren and for charities... The patterns are easy for a person who has done some other crocheting. If you are JUST starting out and are strictly NEW to crocheting: Start with things like potholders, etc. Then move on to dolls, amigurumi, and other fun stuff! The book is a good buy and I'm using it all the time! Have fun crocheting...

 • Great Book, But Some Skill Required
05 November, 2008

I've had this book for nearly a week. I was a non-crocheter when I received it and now I can honestly say that I can crochet! I'm still trying to make the monkey from the cover. I think the skill levels are bit askew, as the easy pieces should be intermediate and the intermediate pieces should be labeled as hard (the humanoids). There aren't really any easy projects for a beginning crocheter. I found the stitch diagrams very easy to follow and although the patterns are complicated, they can be done with a little trial and error. I bought this book especially for the humanoids, so I really don't mind that most of the other projects aren't for me. I did find it annoying that some of the patterns call for several different size hooks. I don't think it should be necessary to buy a full set of hooks in every size! A beginner might find the wording a bit difficult. In several instances, the instructions merely say "evenly spaced around" instead of giving exact instructions. This is extremely confusing when it wants you to increase so many stitches over several rows. The other amigurumi book I have, Amigurumi World by Ana Rimoli, is much better with directions as it tells you exactly which stitch to do when. It doesn't assume that you can figure it out on your own, and you shouldn't have to since you bought the directions! Overall, a beginner can have success with this book, so give it a try! Just don't be surprised if it takes you a few tries to get it right.
