Product Description
In 1565 the Ottoman Empire was at its peak. Under their sultan, Solyman the Magnificent, the Turks had conquered most of Eastern Europe. The rulers of Christian Europe were at their wits' end to stem the tide of disaster. The Knights of St John, the fighting religious order drawn from most of the nations of Christendom had been driven from their island fortress of Rhodes 40 years earlier. From their new base of Malta their galleys had been so successful in their raids on Turkish shipping that the Sultan realised that only they stood between him and total mastery of the Mediterranean. He determined to obliterate the Knights of Malta. This reconstruction of the Siege of Malta brings history alive, and carries the reader through many battles, the heroism and the hunger to the relief which came, nearly too late, and the final victory.

 • Spectacular
09 October, 2007

For anyone who claims history is 'boring' this book is the remedy - an absolute page-turning account of a desperate battle. The account, though historically informative, reads like a novel. It is concisely written, expressive, and utterly captivating; I could not put it down. I highly recommend this book if you're interested in not only learning about the tactics of a fascinating struggle, but in obtaining a sense of what it must have been like to be in desperate Malta in 1565. You need not have any prior knowledge about Malta, and you are guaranteed to come away genuinely enthusiastic about the subject. After reading this book, it wasn't long until I had to go to Malta to see it for myself. Thank you Ernle Bradford.

 • Great Siege: Malta 1565 (wordsworth Military Library.)
29 November, 2008

Col. Ernle Bradford gives an easy, though profound insight; well researched, with the knowledge of an achieved soldier and accomplished sailor. His courage he had done proof of in Egypt more than expected; the king knows and felt it.

 • The Horrors Of War
20 February, 2010

"...each regarded the other as an infidel, the slaying of whom was the sacrifice most acceptable to the God they worshipped." Bradford spares no pains in describing the pleasurable pains of kiling and being killed in battle. Torture, slaying of anyone in one's path including women and children, and above all the absolute conviction of both sides that they are in the right. For the reader who isn't looking for a glorified picture of war, THE GREAT SIEGE is a good place to start. It's readable, has plenty of action (all bloody), and for those who aren't familiar with the struggle depicted here, will be a cliffhanger up to the last pages. Popular, rather than scholarly, this book will disappoint anyone looking for adequate documentation. Quoted material occurs without references, and the very necessary maps are much too fragmentary. All-in-all this is still an excellent glimpse into a fascinating struggle between East and West that still goes on today.

 • Malta, The Epitomy Of Courage Through The Centuries.
11 May, 2009

The preceding reviews were well worded how could I say more....Any student of history, military tactics, would be intrigued with this account of an amazing defense by a small force against a determined, huge force of invaders. Written, in log form, by a 'foot soldier', improved upon by the translator, it is a gripping account of a (ca) 4 month struggle. (Desert summers are bitterly hot). Many people do not know where Malta is located. It is a tiny island (10m x 20m) in the Mediterranean, about halfway between Lybia and Sicily. It received more bombardment, in WW2, than did London. (It is a very strategic place/stronghold for invasions elsewhere). My family was Maltese, and the original author was a namesake, so I have great pride for them. All I can say is that it is well presented and I agree with a previous reviewer that the circumstances would make a great movie. Eileen Balbi Swingle ,Valley Center, California

 • Great Siege: Malta 1565 (wordsworth Military Library.)
21 December, 2007

Great Siege: Malta 1565 (Wordsworth Military Library.) This is a good, well written book. The siege of Malta is one of those great episodes of history where almost super-human courage and bravery triumph against overhelming odds. If you like adventure read this book: besides reading like a fascinating adventure story it happens to describe real-life actual facts. Beats any Hollywood epic, imho.
