Product Description Image Editing has become a key element in the photographic workflow. Image editing tools, most notably Photoshop, are usually sophisticated and deep applications - and fairly expensive. The only open source tool in this market is the GIMP, which has developed into a powerful multiplatform system, running on Linux, as well as OS X and Windows. This book has evolved from the classroom materials the author developed and used in courses and workshops on Image Editing with the GIMP. It covers the basics of image editing and guides the reader through the functions and tools of GIMP from simple adjustments to more advanced techniques with layers and masks. The more important editing functions are presented in individual workshops. Moreover, the book covers the stitching of panoramic images and preparation of high-quality black and white images.

Gimp 2 Review 19 November, 2007 The book is very well written and provides a lot of background information that is helpful.
For instance, in primary school (pardon the pun) we were taught about primary colours and how Blue plus Yellow gave you Green. The RGB system however has Red, Green, Blue as its basics, and Yellow becomes a Red Green composite.
I enjoyed it, and will obtain the basic online GIMP documentation and another text from Amazon to get me going.
I want to create some derivative sketches from photographs, and creating layers which derive from the original, and merge together to form a basic sketch.
I was looking for a 'cookbook' approach, but this book tries to give more depth without getting so technical that you lose interest.
Thanks Klaus Goelker for writing it.

Good Book For Beginners 25 December, 2007 I found this book a good start for beginners but not sufficient to address the need of intermediate or advanced image editors. Well written but poorly binded.

Fantastic Gimp 2 Reference 05 September, 2007 'GIMP 2 for Photographers: Image Editing with Open Source Software' by Klaus Goelker continues the great image book line by rocky nook. With an attractive layout, great writing and instruction and a nice amount of screenshots, this is the perfect reference for all GIMP users! From novice to professional, you will learn the ins and outs of using this great open source image editing software and no doubt pick up some new tips and tricks if you have used GIMP for some time. From the basics like using layers and image resizing to more complicated usage, this is a great great resource.
Short at ~185 pages and 4 chapters, I would like more content but the content within still makes this a solid buy. If you are a photographer and want to get warped up with using GIMP asap, learn with this great book from rocky nook!!

The Gimp Is No Gimp 30 October, 2007 The Gimp has evolved over the years, with pieces tacked on here and there to add features that help it keep pace with Photoshop (at a much lower "price.") Originally a program written by propeller-heads for propeller-heads, the program has actually become useful for photographers who don't have a computer-programming bent. Even so, the interface can be confusing, and that's where this excellent book comes in. It helps you sort out all the features of The Gimp so you can get up and running and actually use this program. Then, it shows you what you need to know to move into more advanced image editing. Highly recommended.
